Job Overview:
The Senior Economist position at IFC is a critical role that involves leading analytical work covering China and other selected countries in East Asia. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to business development by providing customized, up-to-date research and analysis that informs investment and advisory teams. This role requires a committed and dynamic professional with strong analytical skills, policy-relevant experience, and expertise in market and sectoral analysis. The Senior Economist will also be responsible for producing regional and country-level economic assessments, leading analytical products, and coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure that private sector reforms are effectively integrated into country engagement products. The position demands a deep understanding of East Asian economies, particularly China, and the ability to translate complex economic and policy analysis into actionable strategies and reforms.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Economist will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: contributing to business development by providing investment and advisory teams with timely research and market assessments; identifying market opportunities through real-time analytics; providing analytical support for IFC investment projects; serving as a focal point for WBG coordination and collaboration; leading the preparation of Country Private Sector Diagnostics (CPSDs); working closely with the Knowledge Bank to coordinate diagnostics and develop flagship studies; providing front-office support to senior management; facilitating consultations with stakeholders; and mentoring junior colleagues while ensuring quality control of strategic and analytical work. This role requires a proactive approach to identifying and delivering actionable reforms that can open private sector opportunities and support IFC industries.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a PhD or master's degree in economics, along with at least 12 years of relevant professional experience. A proven track record of excellence in research and analytics, including published work, is essential. The ideal candidate should have expertise in both macro- and micro-level economic issues, with solid experience in private sector policies and market analysis. Familiarity with the Chinese economy and specific thematic areas such as private sector regulations or climate policies will be advantageous. Experience with economic models, financial models, or econometric approaches is desirable, as is the ability to understand the impact of macroeconomic trends on micro-level financial flows and investments. Strong writing and communication skills are critical, as is the ability to work effectively in a team and manage relationships with stakeholders.

Educational Background:
The position requires a PhD or master's degree in economics, which provides the foundational knowledge necessary for conducting high-level economic analysis and research. This educational background is crucial for understanding complex economic frameworks and developing effective strategies for private sector engagement and market development.

Experience:
The Senior Economist role demands at least 12 years of relevant professional experience, which should include a strong background in research and analytics, particularly in the context of economic development and private sector engagement. Candidates should have experience in leading or contributing to analytical work within the World Bank Group, including the preparation of country engagement products such as Country Partnership Frameworks (CPFs) and Country Climate and Development Reports (CCDRs). A history of working on high-risk projects and engaging in policy dialogue and lending operations will be beneficial.

Languages:
