Job Overview: The Social Media Officer position is crucial for the Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office of the OHCHR. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and producing high-impact multimedia content for various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. This role requires a strategic approach to outreach activities, aiming to engage and inform external audiences about human rights issues. The officer will exercise journalistic and political judgment to make timely editorial decisions, ensuring that the content aligns with the organization's mission and objectives. Duties and Responsibilities: The Social Media Officer will undertake a variety of duties, including but not limited to: developing and producing multimedia content for social media platforms; exercising editorial judgment to determine what content is published; planning and initiating outreach activities through social media campaigns; maintaining relationships with key stakeholders; increasing the organization's following and engagement on social media; promoting in-house social media usage; monitoring and evaluating the impact of social media content; conducting social listening to identify trends; advising management on appropriate actions; contributing to communications campaigns; representing OHCHR in UN social media groups; providing guidance to public information officers; and delivering training on effective social media use.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in communications, public information, or journalism, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in these fields. Experience managing social media platforms is essential, along with a solid understanding of human rights issues, particularly at the international level. Familiarity with monitoring and analyzing social media results is also required. The ability to conceptualize and implement social media campaigns is crucial, as is the capacity to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, international relations, political science, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public information, journalism, or public relations. Candidates should have experience managing various social media platforms and a background in human rights at the international level, preferably within the United Nations system or similar organizations. Experience in disseminating news on social media and in monitoring, measuring, and analyzing social media results is desirable.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in English is required, with a minimum UN Level II proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of French is advantageous but not mandatory.
