Job Overview:
As an Electrical Engineer at CERN, you will play a pivotal role in the upgrade of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector's electrical infrastructure. This position requires you to work closely with the CERN electrical infrastructure team to refine project specifications, validate technical solutions, and coordinate the implementation of these solutions. You will supervise the power distribution cabling activities for the CMS sub-detectors and participate in safety assessments for all electrical activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards. Your role will involve overseeing the evolution of the electrical network in both surface and underground areas of the CMS, reporting on scheduling, work progress, and risks to the Technical coordination-team" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Coordination team. You will also coordinate procurement and installation efforts for power systems and cables, establish quality assurance procedures, and support the CMS detector team in re-powering systems for operational readiness.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the evolution of the electrical network in CMS surface and underground areas, acting as the interface to contractors and support groups.
  • Report to Technical Coordination on scheduling, co-activity requirements, work progress, and risks.
  • Coordinate procurement, connectorisation, and installation of power systems and cables for CMS sub-detectors.
  • Establish QA/QC procedures for commissioning and acceptance of electrical installations, documenting test execution.
  • Supervise site activities by contractors and collaboration personnel, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Support the CMS detector team in re-powering and ensuring readiness for operation.
  • Participate in safety assessments of electrical activities, including lock-down and re-powering of systems.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards during all electrical activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Established experience in designing and sizing low-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Hands-on experience with installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of complex power distribution systems.
  • Proficiency in using electrical measurement and diagnostic instruments.
  • Solid understanding of electrical schematics and cabling documentation, with the ability to produce high-quality documentation using electrical design software.
  • Knowledge of power distribution equipment and high-reliability connection principles.
  • Experience in organizing teamwork and working within multidisciplinary teams while ensuring workplace safety.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, particularly in power distribution systems and electrical safety.

Experience:
Candidates should have established experience in the design and sizing of low-voltage power distribution systems. Hands-on experience with the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of complex power distribution systems is essential. Experience in organizing teamwork and working within multidisciplinary teams is also required, along with a solid understanding of safety protocols in electrical engineering.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. Proficiency in both languages is advantageous and will enhance communication within the diverse team at CERN.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires full-time onsite work, with a 40-hour work week. Candidates must be prepared for work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and may need to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required. A valid driving license is necessary, and candidates must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position.
