Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN is known for its collaborative environment, bringing together professionals from various fields to foster innovation and scientific discovery. The organization operates in multiple countries and is committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.

Job Overview:
The position is within the CERN Engineering department, specifically in the Cooling and Ventilation (EN-CV) group. This group is tasked with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of cooling and ventilation systems for CERN's large energy physics accelerators and experimental facilities. The successful candidate will join the PSM Section (EN-CV-PSM), which focuses on the operation and maintenance of these systems. The role involves supervising installation work, commissioning new systems, upgrading existing systems, and consolidating older systems. The technician will contribute to sustainable cooling and ventilation solutions that enhance energy efficiency and recovery, ensuring that CERN's complex technical installations operate effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising, and performing preventive and corrective maintenance activities on cooling and ventilation systems. Key duties include ensuring the proper operation of these systems, maintaining regular communication with clients regarding equipment, proposing solutions for modifications or renovations, and technically coordinating contractors' activities. The technician will also contribute to projects from the design phase through to testing and commissioning of new systems, ensuring that all technical documentation is up-to-date and compliant with quality standards. Safety compliance during all interventions is paramount, and the technician will be expected to follow up on activity progress, schedules, and costs regularly.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in Refrigeration, Electromechanics, or a related field. A fluid handling permit or equivalent is considered advantageous. The role requires experience in maintenance, operation, and installation of cooling, ventilation, and industrial systems, as well as technical coordination of external contractors and familiarity with CMMS tools. Experience with low-voltage electrical systems and initial experience in compressed air systems is also necessary, along with demonstrated experience in refrigeration system operations and installations.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position includes a higher technical diploma in a relevant field such as Refrigeration, Electromechanics, or a closely related discipline. Equivalent experience may also be considered acceptable, particularly if it demonstrates the necessary technical competencies required for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in the maintenance, operation, and installation of cooling and ventilation systems. This includes technical coordination of external contractors and proficiency in using CMMS tools. Experience in low-voltage electrical systems and initial exposure to compressed air systems is also beneficial. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems and installation works, along with experience in supervising work sites and contractors.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learning French being a significant advantage. This bilingual capability will enhance communication within the diverse environment at CERN and facilitate collaboration with various stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract thereafter. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role is fully onsite. The technician will participate in regular stand-by duties, which may include nights, Sundays, and official holidays. The role involves working in radiation areas and underground installations, requiring a valid driving license and medical clearance due to occupational health risks. The job grade is classified as 3-4, and the reference for this position is EN-CV-PSM-2026-122-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary, comprehensive health insurance, paid leave, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
