Job Overview:
The AI Innovation and Mediation Intern position is designed for individuals with a technology-focused academic background and a keen interest in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Mediation Unit's initiatives that leverage technology and artificial intelligence to enhance mediation practices. This role involves contributing to the development of AI tools that streamline mediation processes, improve efficiency, and support the overall mission of the Ombudsman Office. The intern will engage in research, prototyping, and testing of AI-supported tools, which may include designing workflows, automating case management processes, and analyzing mediation data. Additionally, the intern will assist in integrating generative AI into training materials and mediation support functions, thereby contributing to the modernization of mediation practices within the UN system. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of technology and conflict resolution, making a meaningful impact on the effectiveness of mediation services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the development of AI tools for mediation practice: The intern will assist in researching, prototyping, and testing AI-supported tools for mediation, including designing and automating workflows, templates, and case management processes. They will structure and analyze mediation data and help develop UN reporting tools. The intern will also explore decision support concepts, such as 'AI judge' prototypes, and integrate generative AI into training materials and mediation support functions. Deliverables may include creating AI systems to enhance mediation efficiency, preparing lists of useful AI resources, developing AI chatbots for organizational guidance, and suggesting additional AI applications for mediation practice.
  • Support the mediation unit’s training and project activities: Under the supervision of the Mediation Specialist/Manager, the intern will help prepare training materials, coordinate projects, and organize various events. This includes creating AI-efficient training mechanisms and exploring AI tools beneficial for mediation and ombuds training.
  • Provide other administrative and substantive support as required, ensuring that the Mediation Unit's operations run smoothly and effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program in computer science, information systems, data science, AI, software engineering, or related technology fields. Alternatively, candidates may be in the final year of a first university degree program in a relevant technology field or have recently graduated from a relevant technology program within the past year. Those enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program in a technology field may also apply. Additionally, master's degrees in Law, Human Resources, Organizational Behaviour, Psychology, Counselling, or other social sciences may be considered if accompanied by strong technological skills. A demonstrated understanding of AI tools and systems, particularly Copilot and Gemini, is essential, along with familiarity with workflow automation and data visualization tools.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes enrollment in a postgraduate degree program in relevant technology fields such as computer science, information systems, data science, AI, or software engineering. Candidates may also qualify if they are in their final year of a bachelor's degree program in a related field or have graduated from such a program within the last year. Additionally, candidates enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program in a technology field may apply. Strong technological and technical skills are essential, especially for those with degrees in social sciences like Law or Psychology.

Experience:
Candidates should have demonstrated experience or coursework in AI, automation, data analysis, and software tools. A strong understanding of AI tools and systems, particularly Copilot and Gemini, is required. Familiarity with workflow automation, data visualization, or prototyping tools is desirable. A strong interest in mediation and broader alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and negotiation, is essential. Experience with generative AI tools is an advantage, and knowledge of ADR systems and disciplines is highly preferred. Some work experience in relevant fields will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluent written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an advantage, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse environment of the UN.

Additional Notes:
The internship is set for a duration of 3 months, with the possibility of an extension for an additional 3 months. It is a full-time position that may be conducted in person in New York or virtually, depending on the needs of the Office and agreement with the supervisor. Interns working in person are responsible for their travel, visa, accommodation, and related costs. Virtual interns are expected to maintain regular availability during New York business hours. The stipend for New York-based interns is USD 1,000 per month, while the stipend for remote interns will be determined based on their physical location. Interns are not considered staff members and must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan. They are expected to work full time, but flexibility is allowed for educational commitments. Interns must arrange their own travel, visa, and accommodation, and are encouraged to apply for positions within UNDP during their internship.
