Job Overview:
The position of Editor of CERN Courier involves taking full editorial responsibility for the magazine, which serves as a key communication tool for the high-energy physics community. The role requires a passion for science communication and the ability to engage with a wide audience about the latest developments in particle physics. The editor will lead the strategic direction of the magazine, ensuring it remains at the forefront of scientific discourse. This includes liaising with CERN and global communities, commissioning and editing articles, managing the magazine's online presence, and mentoring the editorial team. The editor will also be responsible for maintaining the magazine's reputation as a leading source of information in the field, contributing to public engagement and awareness of CERN's societal impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and develop the strategic direction of the CERN Courier, ensuring it aligns with CERN's mission and objectives.
  • Liaise with CERN and the global high-energy physics community to gather insights and content for the magazine.
  • Commission and edit expert-authored feature articles that highlight significant advancements in particle physics.
  • Write news, features, and other articles that engage and inform the readership.
  • Conduct picture research, fact-checking, and proofreading to maintain high editorial standards.
  • Manage and grow the cerncourier.com website and the magazine's social media accounts, enhancing its online presence.
  • Supervise and mentor the editorial team, fostering professional development and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with the remote production manager and in-house marketing officer to ensure cohesive messaging and branding.
  • Participate in events and conferences to promote the magazine and engage with the scientific community.

Required Qualifications:
  • A PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Particle Physics or a closely related field.
  • Proven track record of research in particle physics or a closely related subject.
  • Demonstrated experience in an editorial or communications role, particularly within a scientific context.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.
  • Familiarity with strategic communications planning and stakeholder relationship management.
  • Technical competencies in text editing, proof-reading, and social media management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent experience in the field of Particle Physics or a related discipline. This educational background is essential to ensure a deep understanding of the subject matter and the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively to a broad audience.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of research in particle physics or a closely related field, along with substantial experience in an editorial or communications role. Experience managing multiple tasks and meeting strict deadlines is essential. Desirable experience includes working on a science magazine and managing social media channels, as well as skills in graphics/design and web development.

Languages:
Exceptional proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory, as the role requires high-level communication skills. A commitment to learning French is also expected, as it will enhance the candidate's ability to engage with the local community and CERN's diverse workforce.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires full-time onsite work, with a standard working hours of 40 hours per week. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this job is SR-ECO-CO-2026-121-LD.
