Job Overview:
The Visiting Scientist Programme at CMRE is designed to support the Research Division (RD) and the Engineering and Information Technology Division (EITD) in their ongoing projects. This program provides an opportunity for top scientists from NATO member countries to engage in a dynamic research environment, contributing to significant scientific inquiries relevant to NATO's interests. Visiting scientists will have access to state-of-the-art equipment, facilities, and data, allowing them to collaborate closely with CMRE's scientists and engineers. The role involves contributing to CMRE's core competencies, which encompass a wide range of maritime research areas, including underwater acoustics, robotics, ocean observation, and cybersecurity. Successful candidates will be expected to align their research interests with CMRE's current projects and competencies, ensuring that their contributions are relevant and impactful.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Visiting Scientist, the individual will be responsible for conducting independent research that aligns with CMRE's strategic objectives. This includes developing and proposing research topics, collaborating with CMRE staff on ongoing projects, and utilizing CMRE's resources effectively. The role may involve participation in various research programs, such as autonomous mine countermeasures and cooperative anti-submarine warfare. Additionally, the Visiting Scientist will be expected to contribute to the dissemination of research findings through publications and presentations, engage in discussions with other scientists, and participate in community-building activities within the STEM fields. The position requires a proactive approach to research and collaboration, ensuring that the scientist's work contributes to the advancement of maritime security and technology.

Required Qualifications:
To be eligible for the Visiting Scientist Programme, candidates must possess either a Ph.D. with a minimum of 7 years of post-Ph.D. work experience in a relevant field or a Master's Degree accompanied by at least 10 years of experience following the Master's degree. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English, specifically achieving a Standard Language Profile (SLP) of 3333, which indicates a high level of fluency in both spoken and written English. This proficiency is essential for effective communication within the international research team and for the dissemination of research findings.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or a Master's Degree in a field related to the research areas of CMRE. Relevant fields may include, but are not limited to, marine engineering, computer science, robotics, environmental science, and cybersecurity. The educational background should provide a strong foundation for conducting advanced research and engaging with complex scientific problems in the maritime domain.

Experience:
The position requires significant experience in research and development, with a minimum of 7 years of post-Ph.D. experience or 10 years of experience following a Master's Degree. This experience should be in areas relevant to CMRE's core competencies, such as underwater acoustics, robotics, or cybersecurity. Candidates should have a proven track record of conducting independent research, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to scientific publications and projects.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, with a required SLP of 3333. While English is the primary language of communication, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly those spoken in NATO member countries, as it can facilitate collaboration and networking within the organization.

Additional Notes:
The Visiting Scientist assignments are categorized as consultancy roles under NATO regulations, with a minimum duration of 90 consecutive days, extendable by an additional 90 days. Candidates should be aware that travel expenses to and from their residence will be covered by NATO, provided the assignment lasts longer than 30 days. It is the responsibility of the Visiting Scientists to ensure they have the necessary visa to work in Italy, and they must provide proof of insurance coverage for health and accidents during their stay. The recruitment process is open only to nationals of NATO member states, and candidates must be at least 21 years old. Selected candidates will be expected to uphold high standards of integrity and contribute positively to the CMRE community.
