Job Overview:
The position of Graphics Designer is crucial for the successful implementation of the Ecosystem-based Adaptation for Resilient Watersheds and Communities in Malawi (EbAM) project. This role involves enhancing communication and visibility for the project by designing various communication products and materials that align with the project's visual identity. The Graphics Designer will be responsible for creating banners, apparel mock-ups, and presentation templates that effectively convey the project's objectives and achievements. Additionally, the incumbent will translate project documents into local languages, specifically from English to Chichewa and Chitumbuka, ensuring that the information is accessible to local communities. This position requires a blend of creativity, technical skills, and an understanding of the project's goals to produce high-quality communication materials that resonate with the target audience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will have a range of duties and responsibilities, including:
  • Collaborating closely with the Office of Communications (OCC) branches and communication focal points to ensure that all communication materials meet FAO standards and guidelines.
  • Reviewing technical documents related to agriculture, natural resources management, gender, and environmental social safeguards to develop a comprehensive workplan for translation.
  • Translating technical documents from English to Chichewa and Chitumbuka, ensuring accuracy and cultural relevance.
  • Attending technical meetings and presentations to gather insights and information that can inform the design and communication strategies.
  • Maintaining liaison with the OCC to ensure compliance with messaging standards and review processes.
  • Adhering to FAO's communication policies and procedures, including the FAO Strategic Framework and social media guidelines.
  • Performing other related duties as required to support the project's communication efforts and objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
  • A University Degree from an institution recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/UNESCO in Linguistics or Translation Studies.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in translating technical documents, particularly in the fields of agriculture, natural resource management, fisheries, nutrition, and food security.
  • A working knowledge (level C) of English, Chichewa, and Chitumbuka is essential for effective communication and translation.
  • Candidates must be nationals of Malawi or residents of the country with a valid work permit.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a University Degree in Linguistics or Translation Studies from an accredited institution. This educational foundation is critical for understanding the nuances of language and ensuring accurate translations of technical documents. The degree should be recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU) or UNESCO, which underscores the importance of formal education in this field.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in translating technical documents. This experience should be specifically in areas related to agriculture, natural resource management, fisheries, nutrition, and food security. Candidates should demonstrate a strong ability to translate complex technical language into accessible formats for local communities, ensuring that the information is both accurate and culturally appropriate.

Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position include English, Chichewa, and Chitumbuka. A working knowledge (level C) of these languages is essential for effective communication and translation of project documents. Proficiency in these languages will enable the Graphics Designer to accurately convey technical information to local stakeholders and ensure that communication materials are accessible to the target audience. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
This position is part of a project funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and is expected to last for a duration of 6 years, during which the project will be implemented across 11 districts in Malawi. The role is full-time and requires a commitment to high standards of quality and adherence to deadlines. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including government agencies and local communities, to enhance the project's visibility and effectiveness.
