The position is located within the Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician (HVAC) Shop, which is part of the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit under the Plant Engineering Section (PES) of the Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) within the Division of Administration (DOA) of the Department of Operational Support (DOS) at the United Nations. The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to various entities across the UN Secretariat, including departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The FCAS is responsible for the management, maintenance, and operation of the UN Headquarters complex in New York, ensuring effective planning and support for office and conference facilities, property management, travel services, and more. The organization aims to maintain high standards of efficiency and integrity while promoting gender equality and diversity in its workforce.

Job Overview:
The Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician (HVAC) position is crucial for ensuring the proper functioning of HVAC/R systems throughout the UN facilities. The incumbent will provide daily leadership and technical direction to junior technicians and support personnel, ensuring that all tasks are executed safely and in compliance with UN standards. The role involves complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of HVAC/R systems, requiring a high level of technical expertise and the ability to work independently. The technician will also coordinate with other trades and project teams to ensure timely completion of HVAC-related work, and will be responsible for creating and managing work orders, requisitions, and material needs. The position demands a commitment to professionalism, teamwork, and client orientation, as well as the ability to adapt to various challenges in a dynamic work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Provide daily on-site leadership and technical direction for junior technicians and support personnel, ensuring proper execution of tasks and adherence to safety compliance.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of HVAC/R systems, diagnosing faults using advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Conduct field training and technical coaching for junior technicians, ensuring effective communication and technical recommendations to supervisors.
  • Install, maintain, and repair various HVAC/R equipment, ensuring compliance with UN safety rules and applicable building codes.
  • Coordinate with other trades and contractors to ensure proper integration of HVAC-related work.
  • Manage material needs and requisitions, verifying availability of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Perform TC-7 tasks in the absence of the TC-7 Lead Technician, including creating and closing work orders and requesting pricing for materials.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Shop Foreperson or General Foreperson.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a Trade School Diploma. Additionally, candidates must possess EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification. OSHA 30-hr Construction safety certification is desirable and should be acquired within six months of hire, along with mandatory training from the organization. NYS DEC 7G cooling tower certification and FDNY Q-1 operator's license are also desirable qualifications. Candidates must demonstrate professional competence in the HVAC trade, including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, use hand and power tools, and identify priority activities. Educational Background:
Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a Trade School Diploma in a relevant field. This educational background is essential for understanding the technical aspects of HVAC systems and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of experience in HVAC repairs and maintenance or equivalent is required. Candidates must have demonstrated experience working with building management systems (BMS) and the installation, repair, and maintenance of complex HVAC control systems. Experience in a commercial or industrial setting for at least five years is desirable, as is experience supervising staff and working with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

Languages:
English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, but proficiency in French is not mandatory for this position.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time role working the 2nd shift from 3 PM to 11 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime required for emergency repairs and preventative maintenance. The appointment is for an initial period of one year and is subject to local recruitment rules. Candidates must be authorized to work for the United Nations in New York and are responsible for any relocation expenses if selected from outside the duty station. Physical requirements include extensive walking, standing, and the ability to carry 40-50 lbs. The work environment may involve exposure to excessive noise, dust, and other sensory demands, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
