Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world, representing more than 100 nationalities. The organization operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering innovation and collaboration across various fields.
Job Overview: The Mechanical Engineer position at CERN offers a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge fabrication processes, particularly in the development of the Tristron, a high-efficiency RF power source essential for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). The role is situated within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which is renowned for its expertise in designing, manufacturing, and assembling advanced accelerator components. The successful candidate will be involved in research and development (R&D) for manufacturing processes, collaborating closely with design offices and engineering units to finalize designs and oversee manufacturing processes. This position requires a proactive approach to technical discussions and collaboration with experts in various fields, including machining, vacuum brazing, beam welding, metrology, and materials science, to support the R&D program effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer include:
Participating in the manufacturing R&D and fabrication follow-up of Tristron prototypes, ensuring technical discussions and collaboration with experts in machining, vacuum brazing, beam welding, metrology, and materials laboratory.
Focusing on the mechanical realization and development of critical Triode components, including the Anode, Cathode, and Grid.
Overseeing the development of laser micro-machining and other advanced manufacturing technologies for grid manufacturing, utilizing specialized materials.
Defining and following up on feasibility studies for high-precision machining, achieving sub-10 micron tolerances, required surface roughness, and precise parts fit-up.
Defining and following up on feasibility studies for vacuum brazing cycles and/or electron beam welding (EBW) procedures for dissimilar materials, ensuring the metallurgical integrity of joints.
Providing feedback to RF designers and the MME Design Office to optimize designs for manufacturing based on feasibility studies.
Defining QA/QC plans, ensuring R&D traceability and documentation, and recording joining procedures with concerned services.
Participating in defining the complete fabrication sequence for the Tristron with the methods office.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in mechanical, manufacturing, or materials engineering, or a related field. They should have experience in mechanical components assembly and a good understanding of fabrication techniques such as vacuum brazing and electron beam welding. Knowledge of fabrication methods for high-precision mechanical components or RF structures is essential. Familiarity with metallic and non-metallic materials, including OFHC copper, technical ceramics, and high-performance alloys, is also required. Additionally, candidates should have experience with 3D and 2D technical drawings and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and ISO GPS tolerancing standards. Experience with CAD tools, preferably CATIA, is an asset, along with initial experience in quality management processes and knowledge of quality control procedures applicable to mechanical production.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a Master's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials Engineering, or a related field, with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience. Alternatively, a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience is acceptable. Candidates must also be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a professional background in mechanical, manufacturing, or materials engineering, with a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 6 years of relevant experience post-graduation for those with a Master's degree. For candidates with a PhD, no more than 3 years of post-graduation experience is required. This experience should ideally include practical applications in mechanical assembly, fabrication techniques, and quality management processes.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English is the primary language of communication within CERN.
Additional Notes: This position is fully onsite and offers a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the target start date is July 1, 202
The role requires a valid driving license. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, tax-free, depending on the candidate's degree. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year, plus an additional two weeks of annual closure. CERN provides comprehensive health insurance coverage for employees and their families, along with a relocation package and various allowances based on individual circumstances. On-the-job and formal training, including language classes, are also part of the benefits offered.
