Job Overview:
As a Linux System Administrator at CERN, you will play a crucial role in managing critical server hardware within the accelerator data centre. Your responsibilities will encompass the entire lifecycle of server management, from procurement to installation, configuration, and ongoing operation. You will be part of the Controls Software & Services group, which is essential for maintaining the computing infrastructure that supports CERN's particle accelerators. The role requires ensuring the 24/7 availability of core control system services, which are vital for the operation of CERN's facilities. Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary duties will include performing administration" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">system administration tasks for Linux computers connected to the accelerator control system, which includes control room consoles, data centre servers, real-time embedded platforms, and virtual machines. You will be responsible for investigating, diagnosing, and resolving operational problems in collaboration with end-users, which may include equipment specialists and operations teams. Additionally, you will manage the data centre infrastructure, including servers and racks, ensuring their effective networking, powering, and cooling. You will also oversee desktop computers in control rooms and technical buildings, manage networked data-storage systems, and ensure effective backups. Planning and coordinating annual installation work and replacing obsolete equipment will be part of your responsibilities, requiring close collaboration with other system administration team members. You will participate in defining hardware specifications for server and desktop computers during procurement processes.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field. You should have a strong knowledge of the Linux operating system and experience in its administration. Familiarity with operating computing infrastructures in a data centre environment is essential, along with experience in the installation and management of commercial server platforms. Proficiency in configuration management tools such as Ansible or Puppet, as well as version control systems like Git, would be advantageous. You should also demonstrate technical competencies in the installation, operation, and maintenance of computing systems, storage systems, and networks.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in computer systems, networking, and data management, which are critical for the responsibilities of a Linux System Administrator at CERN.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in Linux system administration, particularly in a data centre environment. This includes hands-on experience with server installation, configuration, and management. Familiarity with commercial server platforms and configuration management tools is highly desirable. Experience in troubleshooting and resolving operational issues in collaboration with technical teams is also essential.

Languages:

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires full-time commitment, with working hours set at 40 hours per week. The position is fully onsite, and candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is required, and there may be a need for stand-by duty as dictated by organizational needs.
