Job Overview:
The Electronics Technician position at CERN involves contributing to the upgrade of a sophisticated quench detection system utilized in the operation of superconducting magnets within the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). During a significant shutdown period, the technician will collaborate closely with engineers throughout the entire lifecycle of the project, which includes removing outdated equipment, as well as building, testing, and deploying next-generation electronics. This role is crucial for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the quench detection systems, which play a vital role in the safety and performance of the LHC. The technician will be expected to engage in hands-on work, applying their knowledge of electronics to maintain and enhance the functionality of these systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Electronics Technician include:
  • Maintenance and consolidation of the quench detection system (QDS) electronics within the LHC tunnel.
  • Testing and commissioning of QDS systems to ensure they meet operational standards.
  • Providing support for the operation and maintenance of functional test systems for QDS electronics.
  • Collaborating with engineers to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to electronic systems.
  • Participating in the assembly and basic testing of electronic crates and circuit boards.
  • Conducting routine maintenance and operational checks on electronic systems.
  • Utilizing standard laboratory instrumentation for testing and measurement of both analog and digital electronic circuits.
  • Engaging in cable assembly and connectorization while adhering to basic EMC good practices.
  • Contributing to a team-oriented environment, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess experience in both analog and digital electronics, specifically in the assembly of electronic crates and circuit boards. They should have a solid background in the assembly, basic testing, operation, and routine maintenance of electronic systems. Familiarity with testing and measurement of electronic circuits using standard laboratory instrumentation is essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience in cable assembly and connectorization, applying basic EMC good practices. Strong team-building skills and the ability to collaborate effectively are crucial, along with a strong willingness to learn and continuously improve. Basic knowledge of Python is considered an asset, and candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learning the basics of the other language.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a general secondary education diploma. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Electronics Technician or a related field. It is important to note that applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant field. This experience should ideally encompass work related to electronics, including practical skills in assembly, testing, and maintenance of electronic systems. Candidates should demonstrate a foundational understanding of both analog and digital electronics, as well as experience in collaborative environments.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory for this position. Candidates should also be committed to learning the basics of the other language to facilitate effective communication within the diverse team at CERN. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered beneficial but is not a requirement.

Additional Notes:
This position is fully onsite and involves working in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is required. The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week.   • Compensation includes a monthly stipend of 4687 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks of annual closure, comprehensive health insurance coverage for the employee and their family, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. On-the-job and formal training, including language classes, will also be provided.
