Job Overview:
The Driver position at FHI 360 UK-Nigeria is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of staff, consultants, equipment, and program goods. Under the supervision of the logistics-manager" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Logistics Manager, the driver will be responsible for transporting personnel and materials to various locations, including the office, guest houses, hotels, airports, hospitals, agency offices, and warehouses. The role requires a proactive approach to vehicle maintenance and safety, ensuring that all journeys are authorized and documented. The driver must adhere to safety protocols, maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle, and report any incidents or vehicle defects immediately. This position is vital for supporting the organization's mission to provide humanitarian assistance and improve the living conditions of IDPs in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Conducting pre-use checks on the vehicle each morning and post-use checks after each trip.
  • Verifying that all items listed on the vehicle checklist and inventory are present and in working order upon taking over a vehicle.
  • Reporting any defects or damages to the vehicle immediately.
  • Submitting monthly reports on mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance to the head driver.
  • Ensuring that all vehicle journeys are authorized in advance and recorded in the logbook at the start and completion of each journey.
  • Keeping all vehicle documents, including insurance, valid and updated at all times.
  • Securing vehicle keys and documents when the vehicle is not in use.
  • Ensuring that all passengers use seat belts before the vehicle is in motion.
  • Driving FHI 360 vehicles within approved speed limits and adhering to fleet policies. 1
  • Reporting all incidents or accidents immediately, including near misses. 1
  • Ensuring the safety of all passengers and adhering to security protocols. 1
  • Providing support to logistics and warehouse assistants as required.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Driver position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
  • A qualified SSCE/NECO Certificate Examination is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience working as a driver with reputable organizations, including international NGOs, corporate entities, or government agencies.
  • Experience as a mechanic or auto-electrician is desirable.
  • Previous experience working in the Northeast or in relatively insecure locations is preferred.
  • Possession of a valid National driving license is mandatory.
  • Excellent verbal communication and listening skills are essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and Hausa is required.
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is necessary.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess at least a Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or National Examination Council (NECO) certificate. This educational background is essential for understanding basic vehicle operation and maintenance, as well as for effective communication and documentation.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience working as a driver in reputable organizations. Experience in driving in challenging environments, particularly in the Northeast region of Nigeria, is highly desirable. Additionally, experience in vehicle maintenance or as a mechanic is considered an asset, as it demonstrates the ability to handle minor repairs and vehicle diagnostics.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English, as effective communication with staff and stakeholders is crucial. Additionally, proficiency in Hausa is required to facilitate communication with local communities and ensure smooth operations. Knowledge of other local languages may be considered an advantage but is not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
This position is full-time and is focused on providing essential transportation services to support humanitarian efforts in Northeast Nigeria. The expected hiring salary range for this role is between USD 3,000 and 3,333 annually, depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications.
