Job Overview: The intern will join the Operational Safety (OPS) Section of the Air Navigation Bureau (ANB) and will be involved in supporting activities related to various aviation safety standards and regulatory frameworks. This role is designed for qualified students or recent graduates who are eager to gain practical experience in international civil aviation. The intern will focus on standards development and regulatory frameworks, particularly in areas such as personnel licensing, aircraft operation, airworthiness, and the safe transport of dangerous goods by air. The internship offers a unique opportunity to engage with ICAO's work, providing hands-on experience that can be beneficial for future aviation careers. The intern will work closely with Technical Officers and collaborate with ICAO Regional Offices on OPS-related matters, contributing to a broader understanding of ICAO’s Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) within the global aviation community.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities under the guidance of the Chief of the Operational Safety (OPS) Section and relevant Technical Officers. Key duties include conducting research on assigned topics, analyzing information, and presenting findings for internal review. The intern will assist Technical Officers in reviewing documents, identifying key issues, and supporting the preparation of draft background papers, studies, reports, presentations, and other technical documents for panels and working groups. Additionally, the intern will contribute to the review and update of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and associated guidance material. Other responsibilities include supporting the Assembly, panels, and working groups, preparing draft replies to correspondence from States and international organizations, conducting research and analysis on existing applications and tools, and assisting in the development or improvement of data pipelines for application enhancement. The intern will also contribute to AI-related tasks, including prompt engineering and related activities, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a degree program related to the work of the Operational Safety (OPS) Section. Relevant fields of study include Air Transport Management, Aviation Management (with human factors modules), Human Factors Aviation, Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, Aerospace Systems, Science or Avionics, Systems Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Airworthiness, Flight Operations or Pilot Studies, Aviation Safety or Safety Management, Human Factors or Aviation Psychology, Dangerous Goods or Safety Risk Management, Instrument Flight Procedures, Air Navigation Services, Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, or Artificial Intelligence. Candidates should possess excellent research, writing, and communication skills in English, and demonstrate a strong interest in aviation regulation, international standards, and safety oversight.
Educational Background: Candidates are required to have completed or be currently enrolled in a relevant degree program that aligns with the responsibilities of the Operational Safety (OPS) Section. This includes a variety of fields such as Air Transport Management, Aviation Management, Aeronautical Engineering, and other related disciplines that provide a solid foundation in aviation safety and regulatory frameworks.
Experience: The position is designed for students or recent graduates, indicating that prior professional experience may not be strictly necessary. However, any relevant internships, projects, or coursework that demonstrate a commitment to aviation safety and regulatory practices will be beneficial. The intern should be prepared to engage in a learning environment and contribute to ongoing projects within the OPS Section.
Languages: Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English are essential for this position. Additionally, a working knowledge of any other language of the Organization, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: Interns will receive a stipend in accordance with ICAO policy, but they are responsible for all costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses. The internship duration ranges from 3 to 12 months, with interns expected to work full-time, five days a week. Interns are not permitted to engage in any other form of employment within ICAO during their internship period. They are required to carry out their duties with loyalty, discretion, and conscience, adhering to the official instructions issued by the Organization. Candidates may need a work permit to work in Canada as an intern.
