Job Overview:
The Intern for the Human Rights and Gender Thematic Group will play a crucial role in promoting gender equality and human rights within UN initiatives. This position emphasizes inclusive participation and social change, focusing on communication, advocacy, and youth engagement. The intern will work under the supervision of the Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) and collaborate with the Human Rights and Gender Thematic Group to design and implement initiatives that resonate with young audiences. The intern will be expected to contribute to advocacy messages, develop communication content, and support data-informed advocacy efforts. Additionally, the role involves mobilizing youth participation in consultations and events, coordinating joint UN gender campaigns, and maintaining databases related to gender equality and youth engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the design and implementation of communication and advocacy initiatives focused on gender equality, particularly targeting youth.
  • Contributing to the development of advocacy messages, key talking points, briefing notes, and visibility materials tailored for young audiences.
  • Assisting in creating communication content such as social media posts, articles, visuals, and presentations to promote gender equality campaigns and UN initiatives.
  • Supporting data-informed advocacy by creating simple data visualizations and youth-friendly communication products.
  • Engaging with youth groups, student associations, and youth-led civil society organizations (CSOs) to promote gender equality and human rights.
  • Mobilizing young people for consultations, campaigns, public events, and awareness-raising activities on gender issues.
  • Organizing youth-focused dialogues, workshops, and outreach events related to gender equality.
  • Assisting in the preparation and implementation of joint UN gender campaigns, including stakeholder coordination.
  • Supporting consultations with local NGOs and other stakeholders. 1
  • Reviewing and summarizing documents, strategies, and reports on gender equality and youth engagement. 1
  • Maintaining and updating databases of youth and gender-related stakeholders. 1
  • Supporting UN reporting processes related to gender equality and advocacy efforts as required. 1
  • Performing other related tasks as requested by management.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). A field of study related to communications or advocacy is desired. While professional work experience is not required for the UN internship-programme" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Internship Programme, a relevant field of study is essential. Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. Programme or have completed such programs. Good knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams, and Excel is required, and familiarity with digital and AI communication tools is an advantage. A strong interest in gender equality and women’s empowerment is desirable, along with a good understanding of communication and advocacy processes and tools.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or being enrolled in or having completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Studies in communications or advocacy are particularly desired, as they align closely with the responsibilities of the internship.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, previous engagement in youth activities, volunteering, or participation in student organizations is desirable. This experience can demonstrate a commitment to gender equality and human rights, as well as an understanding of the dynamics involved in advocacy and communication.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position. Knowledge of Macedonian and Albanian is considered desirable, as it can enhance communication and engagement with local communities and stakeholders.
