The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of five days per week, totaling 40 hours. Interns can choose to work either in-person in Geneva or remotely. The internship is set to begin on 18 May 2026 and will last for a duration of four months. Interns will be responsible for various tasks, including data collection and analysis, thematic research, and supporting intergovernmental meetings. The role is intended to enhance the educational experience of interns while contributing to the mission of UNCTAD.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that include:
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Interns will identify and document the value-chain structure of selected critical minerals, detailing the transformation stages from extraction to refined products. They will analyze intermediate products and processing steps, assign Harmonized System (HS) codes, and conduct structured data analysis to identify market and policy drivers affecting critical minerals.
  • Thematic Research and Synthesis: Interns will contribute to targeted research on value addition, diversification, and benefit sharing, compiling best practices. They will assist in establishing global frameworks for traceability and transparency in the minerals value chain.
  • Intergovernmental Meetings: Interns will support the organization of intergovernmental meetings, including logistical arrangements and identifying potential speakers. This multifaceted role will provide interns with a comprehensive understanding of the UN's work in trade and development.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet specific criteria to be eligible for the internship. They should be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) or be in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). Additionally, interns should be computer literate in standard software applications, including Adobe InDesign and Datawrapper. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. Interns should demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs. Knowledge of Excel is required, and familiarity with data visualization tools like Datawrapper or Power BI is considered an asset.
