Job Overview: The Mechanical Technician position at CERN involves contributing to the test facility for superconducting magnets, focusing on the preparation and connection of these magnets to their respective test benches. The role requires participation in all stages of the mechanical preparation and connection of magnet assemblies, ensuring that the necessary mechanical drawings for bench modifications are prepared. The technician will also support the in-field connection of magnets to test benches and follow up on the production of mechanical components either in the workshop or through procurement. This position is crucial for the successful testing and operation of superconducting magnets, which are essential for various experiments at CERN. The technician will work closely with an experienced team to ensure that all designs and modifications are accurately documented and integrated into the existing systems.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Technician include:
Participating in all stages of the connection and mechanical preparation of magnet assemblies to their test benches.
Following up on the production of mechanical pieces in the workshop or through procurement with external companies.
Modifying and creating 3D models and drawings for new types of magnets to prepare necessary interfaces.
Collaborating with the design team to ensure that new inserts for test benches are designed and that integration drawings are kept up to date.
Writing technical documentation and procedures related to the mechanical preparation and connection processes.
Managing orders and follow-ups in the industry to ensure timely delivery of components.
Engaging in hands-on work in a mechanical workshop as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
A maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanics or a related field by the application deadline.
A general secondary education diploma as the highest educational qualification.
No previous contracts as a CERN fellow or graduate.
Applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position.
Experience with CAD software is essential, and hands-on experience in a mechanical workshop is considered an asset.
Strong skills in mechanical design work using a 3D CAD environment are required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a general secondary education diploma. Candidates should have a foundational understanding of mechanics or a related field, which is essential for the technical aspects of the role. Higher educational qualifications such as a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD are not acceptable for this position, as it is specifically aimed at individuals with a secondary education level and limited professional experience.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience in a relevant field since graduation. This experience should ideally be in mechanics or a closely related area, providing the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the duties of the Mechanical Technician effectively. Candidates with extensive experience or higher educational qualifications will not be considered eligible for this role, as it is designed for early-career professionals.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory for this position. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning the other language if they are not already proficient. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse teams at CERN, where collaboration across different language speakers is common.
Additional Notes: The position is fully onsite and offers a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the target start date for the position is July 1, 202
A valid driving license is required for this role. The job reference for this position is TE-MSC-MQA-2026-117-GRAE. Compensation includes a monthly stipend of 4687 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year and additional benefits such as comprehensive health insurance coverage for the employee and their family, child allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. On-the-job training and formal training, including language classes, will also be provided.
