Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With over 2,500 employees and thousands of scientists from around the globe, CERN operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. The organization fosters an environment of innovation and collaboration, bringing together physicists, engineers, technicians, and administrative professionals to push the frontiers of science and technology. Diversity is a core value at CERN, and it remains central to its mission and continued success.
Job Overview: As a Mechanical Technician at CERN, you will be an integral part of a team dedicated to the design, development, and validation of superconducting accelerator magnets. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on prototyping and construction activities related to the engineering of superconducting magnets. You will be involved in various phases of the fabrication of superconducting coils, which includes tasks such as cable insulation, winding, curing, and preparation for heat treatment. Additionally, you will support production activities by modifying mechanical components and participate in the development of custom tooling. This role is ideal for individuals eager to learn and grow within a cutting-edge scientific environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary responsibilities will include participating in the fabrication of superconducting coils, which involves several critical processes such as cable insulation, respooling, winding, curing, and preparing for heat treatment. You will also be tasked with splicing, preparing for epoxy impregnation, and conducting vacuum pressure impregnation. Furthermore, you will assist in the assembly of superconducting demonstrators and short model magnets. Supporting production activities will require you to prepare or modify mechanical components using conventional machines like milling and turning. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of custom tooling necessary for the fabrication processes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess experience in mechanics, manufacturing techniques, and the assembly of systems that require tight tolerances. Experience in developing first-of-a-kind systems, which necessitate the construction of mock-ups and dedicated tooling, is considered an advantage. Basic familiarity with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as Catia, Solidworks, or AutoCAD is also beneficial. Skills in constructing, testing, and installing electromechanical equipment and systems, as well as the ability to read mechanical drawings including ISO-GPS tolerancing, are essential. Additionally, candidates should have basic skills in using conventional chip removal machines and be capable of quality control, writing procedures, and test reports.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a general secondary education diploma. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related field. It is important to note that applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience in the relevant fields since graduation. This experience should ideally be in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline, focusing on practical applications and hands-on work in mechanics and manufacturing.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being essential. This bilingual requirement ensures effective communication within the diverse teams at CERN.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The target start date for this position is May 1, 202
Additionally, candidates must possess a valid driving license and may be required to participate in stand-by duty as needed by the organization. The job reference for this position is TE-MSC-SMT-2026-116-GRAE. Compensation includes a monthly stipend of 4687 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. On-the-job training and formal training, including language classes, will also be provided.
