Job Overview:
The Driver I position is integral to the STRIDES project, which aims to enhance infectious disease detection and surveillance systems in Kenya. The primary responsibility of the Driver I is to provide safe and reliable transportation for project staff and visitors, ensuring that they reach their destinations punctually and safely. The role also involves maintaining the project vehicles in optimal condition, performing routine checks, and reporting any discrepancies to the supervisor. The Driver I will be based in Nairobi but will support various counties where the STRIDES project is implemented, contributing to the overall mission of improving public health through effective disease detection and response.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Drive project staff and visitors to meetings, appointments, and fieldwork as assigned, ensuring safety and courtesy at all times.
  • Assist in picking up and delivering project supplies as directed.
  • Maintain the project vehicle in good condition, including regular cleaning and performing daily safety checks on the vehicle's engine, fluid levels, and tires.
  • Keep a current driving license and notify the Administrative Officer when vehicle licenses are due for renewal or require inspections.
  • Run office errands, including message delivery, visa applications, and mail collection.
  • Ensure that all passengers adhere to traffic rules and regulations, such as wearing seat belts.
  • Report any traffic accidents immediately to the insurance company and the supervisor.
  • Assist with office tasks, such as photocopying and supply pickups.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Director or Administrative Officer.

Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the counties and surrounding areas where the STRIDES project operates, including streets, neighborhoods, airports, and government offices.
  • Proven experience as a safe driver with a valid driver’s license and no history of accidents.
  • Ability to lift heavy packages and move furniture as needed.
  • Basic knowledge of First Aid.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and maintain a reliable work schedule, including the willingness to work extra hours when necessary.
  • A strong commitment to supporting the goals and programs of the STRIDES project.
  • Ability to perform all duties with minimal supervision and in a timely manner.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a secondary school ‘O’ level graduate or relevant vocational training certification. Candidates should have at least three years of relevant experience, along with a minimum of five years working with a public or private organization, specifically in operating motor vehicles such as four-wheel Landcruisers.

Experience:
Candidates should possess a minimum of five years of experience in driving, preferably for a diplomatic mission or NGO. Experience should reflect the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position, including familiarity with the operational context of international organizations.

Languages:
A good working knowledge of English is mandatory, with the ability to understand both spoken and written English. Proficiency in Kiswahili is also required, as it is commonly used in the region.

Additional Notes:
The expected hiring salary range for this role is between KES 850,000 to 1,100,000 annually, depending on the applicant's relevant experience and education.
