Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among a diverse range of professionals, including physicists, engineers, and administrative staff. CERN's mission is to push the frontiers of science and technology, contributing to our understanding of the universe through cutting-edge research and development.
Job Overview: The Mechanical Technician position is part of the Vacuum, Surfaces, and Coatings group within the Technology Department at CERN. The successful candidate will be involved in applying thin carbon coatings in the beam line of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during its next Long Shutdown. This role requires an initial on-the-field training period, after which the technician will participate in the mechanical assembly, commissioning, and operation of vacuum coating systems. The position is crucial for ensuring the effective functioning of the LHC, contributing to the overall mission of CERN in advancing particle physics research. The technician will work closely with a multicultural team of engineers and technicians, emphasizing collaboration and communication in a dynamic work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for designing mechanical parts using CAD software specifically for the coating systems. This includes manufacturing mechanical components using both conventional (milling, turning) and CNC (milling) machines. The technician will perform mechanical assembly of ultra-high vacuum coating systems and operate these systems to deposit carbon thin films in the LHC beam lines. Additionally, the technician will propose upgrades and perform maintenance on the systems, ensuring they operate efficiently. Writing suitable technical documentation is also a key responsibility, as is working effectively within a multi-cultural team of engineers and technicians to achieve project goals.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the design of mechanical parts using CAD software and have practical experience with conventional milling and turning machines. The ability to read mechanical drawings is essential, and experience in operating vacuum systems and/or coating systems is considered an asset. Familiarity with CNC machines is also advantageous. The ideal candidate should possess skills in mechanical machining (both conventional and CNC), mechanical assembly, and mechanical design using CATIA or equivalent CAD software. Strong report writing skills are necessary, along with the ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learning the other language.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to have a general secondary education diploma. It is important to note that applicants must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanics Manufacturing or a related field. Candidates with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position, ensuring that the role is tailored for early-career professionals seeking to gain valuable experience in a prestigious research environment.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a maximum of two years of professional experience in a relevant field since graduation. This experience should ideally be in mechanics manufacturing or a closely related area, providing the foundational skills necessary for the responsibilities outlined in the job description. The position is designed for individuals who are at the beginning of their careers and looking to develop their expertise in mechanical engineering within a world-renowned research institution.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory for this position. Candidates should be committed to learning the other language, as effective communication within the diverse team at CERN is essential. This bilingual requirement reflects CERN's international environment and the need for collaboration among professionals from various linguistic backgrounds.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite, requiring the technician to be present at CERN's facilities. The target start date for this position is July 1, 202
The role may involve work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, necessitating residence in the immediate vicinity of CERN's installations. A valid driving license is required, and the technician may be required to perform stand-by duty, as well as work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, depending on the organization's needs. The position offers a monthly stipend of 4687 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, and comprehensive health insurance coverage for the employee and their family. Additional benefits include a relocation package and opportunities for on-the-job training and formal training, including language classes.
