Job Overview:
The Book Reviews Editor will play a crucial role in managing the commissioning, review, and acceptance process for book reviews submitted to the International Review of Education – Journal of Lifelong Learning. This position requires the successful candidate to ensure a diverse and high-quality range of book reviews, thereby enhancing the journal's reputation as a leading publication in lifelong learning. The editor will also support the Executive Editor in managing the peer review process for general submissions, ensuring that the journal attracts top authors and papers. The role involves staying updated on new publications, selecting suitable titles for review, and providing feedback to book reviewers to maintain the journal's standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Book Reviews Editor will be responsible for several key tasks: selecting suitable titles for book reviews by browsing publisher catalogues, soliciting recommendations, and reading reviews in peer journals; identifying and commissioning suitable book reviewers, providing clear instructions regarding style and submission procedures; providing feedback to book reviewers, including editing reviews to meet journal standards; managing the roster of book reviewers, maintaining accurate records, and deciding which unsolicited reviews merit publication; collaborating with the Assistant Editor to determine which reviews to include in each issue; helping to attract high-quality research submissions and proposals for special issues; supporting the peer review of articles in their area of expertise; and reporting to the IRE Editorial Board or Executive Editor as required. Administrative tasks related to book reviews will be handled by the IRE Secretary, while the Consultant will work remotely and must provide their own equipment and software.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in education, particularly in lifelong learning, adult education, or related fields. They should demonstrate experience in academic publishing, particularly in managing peer-reviewed journals or similar publications. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with authors and reviewers are essential. Familiarity with the academic publishing process and a network within the education sector will be advantageous. Candidates should also exhibit a commitment to the values of UNESCO, including integrity, respect for diversity, and professionalism.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree or higher in education, lifelong learning, or a related field is required. Candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline will be preferred. A strong academic background, including publications in peer-reviewed journals, will be beneficial for this role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have substantial experience in academic publishing, ideally with a focus on education or lifelong learning. Previous roles in editorial positions or as a reviewer for academic journals will be highly regarded. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing editorial processes and working collaboratively with authors and reviewers.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as the journal is published in English. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly French or Spanish, would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader range of authors and publications.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is for an initial duration of six months, starting in May 2026, with the possibility of extension based on performance. The role is remote, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements. Compensation is set at EUR 1,500 per month, with payments made upon submission of required reports.
