Job Overview: The Principal Environmental and Social Advisor will play a crucial role within the EBRD’s Environment and Sustainability Department (ESD), focusing on leading and supporting environmental and social due diligence and monitoring activities. This position requires a proactive individual who can effectively liaise with various stakeholders, including international ESD advisors, EBRD bankers, clients, and consultants. The Principal will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy, which involves overseeing the appraisal and monitoring of projects across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, energy, and corporate sectors. The role demands a strong understanding of environmental and social risks, particularly in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa, and the ability to contribute specialist input to complex and high-risk projects. The Principal will also be expected to travel to other EBRD countries of operation as necessary, reflecting the global nature of the role and the importance of on-the-ground assessments.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Principal Environmental and Social Advisor will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing specialist input to projects and Technical Cooperation initiatives, managing delivery of specific sub-projects or tasks, conducting assessments of Environmental and Social Policy compliance, evaluating E&S risks and impacts, and contributing to climate and nature risk assessments. The Principal will coordinate project and consultant teams, conduct analytical and technical reviews, develop methodologies, and manage data. They will also represent ESD at various internal and external meetings, support capacity-building initiatives, mentor junior staff, and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes. Additionally, the Principal will prepare internal and external reports and ensure that all work aligns with the Bank’s Behavioural Competencies and Corporate Behaviours.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks and impacts is essential, along with knowledge of international environmental, social, and climate standards. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies of international financial institutions is also required. Strong interpersonal skills, effective time management, and the ability to communicate complex issues to diverse stakeholders are critical for success in this role. Candidates should demonstrate analytical and quantitative skills, as well as experience in mentoring and coaching less experienced staff.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with comparable professional experience may also be considered. Advanced degrees or certifications in environmental management, social sciences, or related fields would be advantageous and may enhance a candidate's profile.
Experience: The position requires substantial experience in environmental and social risk assessment, project management, and working with multi-disciplinary teams. Candidates should have a strong background in leading projects and initiatives, particularly in complex and high-risk environments. Experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in West Africa, is strongly recommended, as is familiarity with the countries in which the EBRD operates or plans to operate.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent written and spoken communication skills. Familiarity with a language spoken in the EBRD countries of operations would be advantageous. For positions based in local offices, fluency in the local language is required to facilitate effective communication with stakeholders.
