Job Overview:
The position involves conducting a mapping of forms of violence affecting women in low-lying areas of Kaskazini Unguja and Kaskazini Pemba regions in Zanzibar. The consultant will examine how these barriers limit women's participation in key economic value chains, specifically in agriculture, including seaweed, sea cucumber, cassava, and banana farming. The mapping will identify existing discriminatory practices and gender stereotypes, and provide recommendations for advocacy, awareness-raising, and legal reforms to improve the prevention of violence against women and promote the use of essential services for survivors. The consultant will work closely with local government authorities and stakeholders to enhance coordination and promote positive social change.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for preparing an inception report summarizing the assignment's scope and methodology, conducting a desk review of existing reports on violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Zanzibar, and performing qualitative and quantitative mapping of violence and gender stereotypes in the selected localities. They will also map existing initiatives to prevent VAWG, available services for survivors, and community-led initiatives that empower women. The consultant will prepare lessons learned and recommendations based on the findings, and deliver a final report that includes actionable data linking gender-based violence to economic performance in agriculture value chains.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a master's degree in social science, Development or Gender Studies, Legal Studies, or related fields. They should have experience in conducting assessments and studies related to gender-based violence, as well as the ability to work collaboratively and meet deadlines. Strong analytical skills and the capacity to develop gender-related strategic plans and policy documents are essential. Experience working in Tanzania and knowledge of the local context is required, along with the ability to produce high-quality reports.

Educational Background:
A master's degree in social science, Development or Gender Studies, Legal Studies, or related fields is required for this position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of gender issues and the socio-economic factors affecting women's rights and empowerment in Zanzibar.

Experience:
The position requires significant experience in conducting assessments and related studies, particularly in the context of gender-based violence. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with communities and engaging with various stakeholders. Experience in developing gender-related strategic plans and policy documents, as well as familiarity with the local context in Zanzibar, is highly desirable. Previous work with UN agencies on similar assignments will be an asset.

Languages:
Written and oral proficiency in English and Swahili is mandatory for this position. These language skills are essential for effective communication with stakeholders and for producing high-quality reports that meet the organization's standards.

Additional Notes:
The assignment will last for three months from the signing of the contract. Payments will be made in tranches based on the completion and acceptance of specified deliverables, including an inception report, a draft report, and a final report. UN Women reserves the right to withhold payment if performance is unsatisfactory or if deadlines are not met. All materials developed during the consultancy will remain the copyright of UN Women, and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar will have the right to adapt and modify them in the future.
