Job Overview: The Resident Coordinator (RC) serves as the highest-ranking representative of the United Nations development system (UNDS) at the country level. The RC is tasked with coordinating UN support to countries in their efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda. The position requires a deep understanding of the UN's assets and a commitment to sustainable development, with a focus on poverty eradication and inclusivity. The RC engages with various stakeholders, including government officials, civil society, and the private sector, to address national needs and sustainable development challenges.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Resident Coordinator is responsible for representing the UN at high levels of government, fostering engagement with various partners, and leading the UN country team in developing and monitoring the UN Cooperation Framework. Key responsibilities include coordinating UN system-wide support to the government, promoting human rights and gender equality, engaging with diverse entities for strategic partnerships, and facilitating access to resources for sustainable development. The RC also oversees country financing instruments, manages security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security coordination, and ensures compliance with UN policies on sexual exploitation and abuse. Additionally, the RC is responsible for promoting UN common business operations and integrating humanitarian efforts with development programming in conflict and post-conflict settings.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in fields such as development studies, international relations, political science, economics, social sciences, human rights, or law. A first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree if combined with relevant experience. The position requires a minimum of 15 years of substantive experience in leadership roles at the international level, including five years in development, human rights, or humanitarian work at the country level. Previous experience as a Resident Coordinator is desirable, along with political acumen and experience in engaging with senior government officials.
Educational Background: A Master's degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in relevant fields is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree and significant relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should align with the responsibilities of the position, emphasizing development, international relations, and related disciplines.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 15 years of substantive experience in leadership roles at the international level, including at least five years in development, human rights, or humanitarian work at the country level. Experience in managing or coordinating humanitarian programs is desirable, as is political acumen and experience in engaging with senior government officials. Previous experience as a senior official responsible for security is also advantageous.
Languages: English and French are the mandatory working languages for this position, with a required proficiency level of UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Arabic is considered a desirable language, also requiring proficiency at UN Level III.
Additional Notes: The position is classified as a D duty station, with a duration of assignment of three years, subject to change based on the hardship classification. The start date for this position is April 2027, and candidates must be members of the Resident Coordinator Pool.
