Job Overview:
The Senior Education Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the Refugee Education 2030 strategy, which aligns with the Global Compact on Refugees. This position is vital in promoting equitable access to quality education for refugees, asylum seekers, and other displaced persons. The Senior Education Assistant will work under the supervision of the Senior Protection Officer and will be responsible for monitoring educational standards, providing technical support, and ensuring that educational programs are effectively implemented. The role involves regular visits to refugee camps, liaising with educational institutions, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance educational opportunities for refugees. The Senior Education Assistant will also contribute to the development of innovative educational approaches that address the unique needs of refugee populations, including special needs education and non-formal learning opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Education Assistant will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Monitoring and following up on 800 scholarship recipients by collecting academic reports from universities.
  • Developing a database of alumni to track professional integration and the impact of scholarships.
  • Establishing partnerships with vocational high schools in the Abéché area and negotiating university placements for students.
  • Coordinating scholarship distributions and verifying recipient profiles with relevant authorities.
  • Supporting colleagues with educational requests and contributing to regular reports on educational activities and challenges.
  • Ensuring that the educational progress of refugee children is accurately recorded in UNHCR databases.
  • Overseeing the implementation of educational programs and providing guidance.
  • Managing the Digital Learning Centre, including training staff and coordinating online courses.
  • Facilitating the exchange of information and best practices within the education sector. 1
  • Performing any other related tasks as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in education, social work, or international development. A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience is required, particularly in education programs. Essential competencies include proven experience in higher education programs, project management, and coordination. Strong interpersonal skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and excellent communication abilities in both French and Arabic are mandatory. Desired qualifications include experience in refugee education programs and familiarity with UNHCR policies and standards. Knowledge of English is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The position requires a university degree at the bachelor's level in education, social sciences, or a related field. Candidates with higher qualifications may also be considered, particularly if they have relevant experience in education or humanitarian contexts.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least two years of relevant work experience in education programs, particularly in humanitarian or development settings. Experience working with government entities, especially in the education sector, is highly valued. Candidates with a background in refugee education or child protection will have an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in French and Arabic is mandatory, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of English is desirable but not required. Familiarity with the local language may also be beneficial for effective communication with the refugee population.
