Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. Established in 1969, UNFPA operates in over 150 countries and has a mission to promote the right of every woman, man, and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. The organization focuses on three transformative results: ending preventable maternal deaths, ending unmet need for family planning, and ending gender-based violence and harmful practices. UNFPA's strategic plan for 2022-2025 emphasizes the importance of addressing the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on women's and girls' access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, while also striving to recover lost gains and achieve its goals by 2030.

Job Overview:
The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the overall Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) technical team, particularly focusing on reproductive and maternal health issues. Under the guidance of the UNFPA Tanzania Deputy Representative and direct supervision of the Programme Analyst-Gender, the intern will assist in analyzing and implementing partners' quarterly reports, documenting lessons learned, and contributing to the development of policy briefs and communication materials. The intern will also engage in fundraising efforts, support the development of a simplified database for key SRH indicators, and provide secretarial support to technical working groups. This internship is designed to provide exposure to international development work and enhance the intern's capacity in programming for young people, while also fostering partnerships with government and other stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Program support: Analyzing and implementing partners' quarterly reports, documenting lessons learned, conducting desk reviews on SRH topics, writing briefing notes and concept notes, engaging in fundraising efforts, and collaborating with M&E and Population and Development Units to develop a database for SRH indicators.
  • Secretariat support: Providing secretarial support to technical working groups, organizing meetings and workshops, and maintaining updated distribution lists.
  • Administrative support: Offering logistical support for events promoting UNFPA's work on SRH and Family Planning, and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor. The expected output includes documenting good practices and human-interest stories related to UNFPA's support in maternal health and family planning.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet several eligibility requirements, including being enrolled in a first university degree program or a postgraduate degree program, or having recently graduated. They should demonstrate interest in development, proficiency in at least one UN working language (English or French), and fluency in the official language of the UNFPA office. Additionally, candidates should be able to adapt to new environments and establish good working relations with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in fields such as medicine, sociology, or public health. Candidates should have completed one full academic year in their degree program or be enrolled in a postgraduate program. Recent graduates must start the internship within one year of graduation.

Experience:
Some experience working with development agencies, including volunteer work, is preferred. Candidates should possess strong analytical and writing skills, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines. Full computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Applications, is also required.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Kiswahili is mandatory. Knowledge of any other UN languages is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's profile for the position.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid, and interns do not receive a salary or remuneration from UNFPA. Costs associated with participation must be covered by the intern or their nominating institution. However, a stipend may be provided to cover basic daily expenses if the intern is not financially supported by any institution. Interns must also have medical insurance for the duration of the internship, and proof of insurance is required before starting. The internship aims to complement studies and career development, and it does not guarantee employment within UNFPA. The work environment at UNFPA promotes gender equality, diversity, and integrity, and encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
