Job Overview:
The Project Manager position is located within UNEP’s Ecosystems Division in Panama City. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of projects related to biodiversity and land degradation. This role involves liaising with various stakeholders to identify project concepts, advising on revisions, and ensuring compliance with Global Environment Facility (GEF) standards. The Project Manager will also monitor project milestones, manage project execution, and prepare reports in accordance with UNEP and GEF criteria. The position requires a proactive approach to project management, ensuring that projects are executed efficiently and effectively while adhering to environmental policies and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Project Manager include:
  • Identifying and developing project concepts in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Advising project proponents on revisions based on peer reviews.
  • Monitoring project milestones to prevent delays and cancellations.
  • Ensuring compliance with GEF quality standards before project submission.
  • Supervising project execution and preparing necessary reports.
  • Organizing project inception meetings and managing project oversight.
  • Regularly assessing project progress and addressing any significant risks or issues.
  • Maintaining project documentation and ensuring financial closure upon project completion.
  • Contributing to knowledge management within the Ecosystems Division and participating in relevant meetings and evaluations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of project and environmental management, with the ability to analyze and resolve issues effectively. Proficiency in data collection and analysis is essential, along with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. The role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and a commitment to gender equality in all areas of work. Candidates should demonstrate leadership qualities and the ability to foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in biodiversity sciences, environmental sciences, natural resource management, environmental policy, or a closely related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Completion of programs in data analytics or related fields is desirable.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in biodiversity and land degradation issues, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, is required. Candidates should have experience in conceptualizing and developing projects in the ecosystems and biodiversity field, with familiarity in working with the Global Environment Facility being an advantage. Experience in data analytics or related areas is also desirable.

Languages:
English and Spanish are required for this position, with proficiency at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of French is an asset but not mandatory.
