Job Overview: The Senior Public Health Associate (Snr.PH Associate) will be an integral member of the Program team at the UNHCR Sub-Office in Tindouf. This position is crucial for the planning, implementation, monitoring, and coordination of health and nutrition programs aimed at improving the well-being of Saharawi refugees. The Snr.PH Associate will work under the technical supervision of the Public Health Officer based in Algiers and will support various initiatives related to public health and nutrition. The role involves analyzing health data, capacity-building for UNHCR personnel and partners, and advocating for public health issues. The Snr.PH Associate will also represent UNHCR in nutrition and food sector meetings, co-chair coordination meetings, and ensure that health interventions align with UNHCR and international standards. This position requires a proactive approach to addressing health and nutrition challenges in the camps, ensuring that the needs of the refugee community are met effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Snr.PH Associate will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including: assisting the Public Health Officer in supervising the implementation of public health and nutrition projects; participating in the identification of priority health and nutrition issues; following up on the implementation and monitoring of public health projects; engaging in regular field visits with partners; reporting weekly on project progress; co-chairing nutrition coordination meetings; implementing local public health strategies; collaborating with stakeholders in health and nutrition sectors; disseminating information materials; mobilizing the refugee community; participating in assessments and surveys; liaising with appealing agencies for health and nutrition; and performing other related duties as required. The Snr.PH Associate will also monitor the implementation of health and nutrition interventions to ensure they meet UNHCR standards and are evidence-based.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in managing community-based public health interventions or programs. Essential qualifications include knowledge of public health, reproductive health, mental health and psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support (MHPSS), and nutrition in humanitarian contexts. Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills are required, along with exposure to UNHCR's mandate and principles. Desirable qualifications include an understanding of the linkages between public health, nutrition, MHPSS, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security, as well as the ability to coordinate diverse actors to achieve common objectives in public health.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this position include a high school diploma or equivalent, with a focus on public health-related studies such as medical studies, psychology, or human nutrition. A bachelor's degree or higher in these fields is preferred. Additional desirable education includes training in health data collection, health project management, and health information systems.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience in managing community-based public health interventions or programs. Experience in refugee operations or other humanitarian interventions is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of public health principles and practices, particularly in challenging environments.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Arabic is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills in at least two UN languages. Knowledge of Spanish and/or French is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural environment.
