Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda and promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. UNEP serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment and was established to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities, and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies, and practices that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production. UNEP operates in multiple countries and has a significant number of employees dedicated to various environmental initiatives.

Job Overview:
The position of Consultant for Antimicrobial Resistance and One Health is crucial for supporting UNEP’s efforts in addressing the environmental drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health approach. The consultant will work closely with UNEP’s Chemicals and Health Branch, focusing on the integration of environmental perspectives into AMR initiatives. This role involves maintaining strategic relationships with UNEP’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and the Brussels Office, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with European Union institutions. The consultant will contribute to the development and implementation of policies and practices that promote sustainable management of chemicals and waste, thereby supporting global health and environmental goals. The expected duration of this consultancy is six months, and the work will be conducted remotely, allowing for flexibility in managing tasks and responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Chief of Chemicals and Health Branch and the AMR Team Lead. Key responsibilities include providing technical and policy expertise on the environmental dimensions of AMR and One Health, supporting UNEP’s engagement in the Quadripartite collaboration, and contributing to the design and implementation of AMR initiatives at regional and country levels. The consultant will manage UNEP’s regional AMR project portfolio, ensuring effective coordination and delivery of projects, and will act as the resource mobilization focal point for the Quadripartite AMR Multi-Partner Trust Fund. Additionally, the consultant will support UNEP’s engagement in global policy processes related to AMR and One Health, contributing to advocacy and knowledge management efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in international cooperation, public health, or closely related fields. In lieu of a university degree, two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted. The position requires at least three to five years of relevant professional experience in international cooperation, environmental policy, public health, or a related field. Demonstrated experience in antimicrobial resistance and/or One Health, particularly focusing on environmental determinants such as pollution and waste management, is essential. Proven experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, and resource mobilization is also required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in fields related to international cooperation, public health, or environmental policy. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree may still be considered if they have additional qualifying work experience that compensates for the lack of a master’s degree. This educational foundation is critical for understanding the complex interactions between health and environmental factors, particularly in the context of AMR.

Experience:
The consultant should have a minimum of three to five years of relevant professional experience. This experience should encompass work in international cooperation, environmental policy, and public health, with a strong emphasis on antimicrobial resistance and One Health initiatives. Candidates should demonstrate a capacity for project management, including coordination with multiple partners and effective monitoring and reporting of project outcomes. Experience working within the United Nations system or in collaboration with interagency mechanisms is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary working language of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the working languages. Additionally, proficiency in another UN language would be considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to UNEP’s global initiatives.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy is home-based, allowing for remote work, which provides flexibility in managing the responsibilities associated with the position. The expected duration of the consultancy is six months, and it is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process. This includes application, interview, and training stages, ensuring that the recruitment process is accessible and equitable for all candidates.
