Job Overview: The position of Consultant for Tick Surveillance and Acaricide Resistance Testing is critical in supporting the Food and Agriculture Organization's initiative in Eswatini. The consultant will provide technical support for the implementation of tick surveillance and acaricide resistance testing, which is essential for managing tick-borne diseases that affect livestock and, consequently, food security. The role involves enhancing field-level coordination, supporting training for animal health staff, and contributing to national reporting and policy recommendations. The consultant will work closely with the FAO Representative in Eswatini, the National ProjectCoordinator, and the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure effective execution of the project objectives. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to engage with various stakeholders to achieve the desired outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for a range of duties, including:
Technical and Operational Support: Assisting in the preparation and adaptation of tick surveillance and acaricide resistance survey protocols to local contexts; supporting the coordination of field deployment of veterinary officials for tick collection; supervising the collection, preservation, and transportation of tick specimens; liaising with veterinary laboratories for sample analysis; and preparing guidelines and supervising tick identification at local laboratories.
Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement: Supporting and co-facilitating training for field veterinary staff in surveillance techniques, data recording, and resistance testing protocols; providing mentorship and technical support to veterinary officials and livestock extension personnel; and facilitating the preparation of manuals and training materials for veterinary officers and dip tank committees.
Reporting and Dissemination: Compiling and validating data from field surveys; contributing to the drafting and review of progress and technical reports; and planning and facilitating workshops and public awareness events as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in Veterinary Science, Parasitology, Entomology, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of five years of relevant experience in the management or research of tick-borne diseases and acaricide resistance is required. Proficiency in English at a working knowledge level (C) is mandatory, and candidates must be nationals of Eswatini or residents with a valid work permit. The FAO core competencies expected include results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in Veterinary Science, Parasitology, Entomology, or a related field. This advanced degree is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively contribute to the project objectives and tackle the complexities associated with tick surveillance and acaricide resistance testing.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in the management or research of tick-borne diseases and acaricide resistance. This experience should ideally include practical involvement in field surveys, technical training, and stakeholder engagement, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa or similar agro-ecological settings. Proven experience applying FAO or similar acaricide resistance testing methods is also essential, along with strong analytical and report-writing skills.
Languages: A working knowledge of English at a proficient level (C) is mandatory for this position. While English is the primary language required, familiarity with local languages may be beneficial for effective communication with stakeholders and local communities.
