Job Overview: The position within the Electronic Systems for Experiments (ESE) group at CERN focuses on the production and functional testing of Hybrid circuits for the CMS Phase-2 Outer Tracker Upgrade. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the qualification and production of advanced instrumentation designed for the CMS detector upgrade. The successful candidate will be integral to a large-scale upgrade project characterized by unprecedented complexity and scale, contributing to the quality control and testing of prototype circuits, and supporting the engineering efforts necessary for the manufacturing processes of the hybrids. The role requires collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, including hardware, software, quality control, and physics experts, to define and implement quality requirements, as well as preparing documentation and reports on the progress of testing activities and manufacturing.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities for this position include: contributing to the quality control and testing of prototype circuits; installing, verifying, and maintaining large-scale test systems at various high-tech industrial contractors; providing engineering support for industrial partners to set up and maintain manufacturing processes of hybrids; supporting the organization and logistics efforts required for hybrid production; collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to define and implement quality requirements; providing engineering support for debugging, repairing, and producing a large-scale automated test system; and preparing documentation and reports regarding the progress of testing activities and manufacturing.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess knowledge of testing electronic components and prototypes using laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters. Experience in test system development (both hardware and software) is essential, including proficiency in Python and C+. Candidates should have experience liaising with industry partners and quality control of electronic circuits. Familiarity with SQL databases and data analysis is advantageous. Additionally, candidates should have skills in PCB design and a basic understanding of PCB manufacturing technology, as well as the ability to devise original approaches to solving multidisciplinary problems. The role requires independence in setting priorities and a collaborative spirit to thrive in a complex, technically challenging project.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronic Engineering or a related field. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years and should not have held a CERN fellow or graduate contract previously. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position.
Experience: The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant field. This experience should ideally be in areas related to electronic engineering, testing, and quality control of electronic components and systems.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French as part of their professional development.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. The target start date for this role is June 1, 202
