Job Overview:
The Interpreter-Translator position within the Languages, Publications and Conference Management (LPC) section of ICAO is crucial for facilitating communication during meetings and conferences. The incumbent will be responsible for providing high-quality interpretation services from English and Russian into French, ensuring that all spoken content is accurately conveyed. Additionally, when not engaged in interpretation, the Interpreter-Translator will perform translation tasks, ensuring that all translated documents are stylistically appropriate and meet the required standards. This role requires a deep understanding of ICAO's specialized subject matter and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining high standards of accuracy and professionalism. The position also involves collaboration with other translators and interpreters, providing guidance and support as needed, and contributing to the development of multilingual glossaries and terminology databases.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Interpreter-Translator will perform a variety of duties, including:
  • Providing interpretation services during ICAO meetings, ensuring high-quality and idiomatic interpretation, especially for sensitive or formal discussions.
  • Translating technical, legal, or administrative texts related to ICAO, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness of vocabulary.
  • Ensuring the quality of translations by proofreading and analyzing source and target texts, and communicating with text originators when necessary.
  • Conducting terminological research to clarify meanings and ensure consistency in translations, collaborating with terminology officers and subject matter experts.
  • Performing additional related duties as assigned, which may include leading teams or coaching other interpreters and translators.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree, preferably in modern languages or technical, legal, or scientific studies. A diploma from an internationally recognized interpretation school or proven work experience as an interpreter is essential. Successful completion of the United Nations Competitive Examination for French Interpreters or admission to the UN Global Language Roster for French interpreters is desirable. Additionally, a first-level university degree from a recognized translation school or proven work experience as a translator is also desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational requirements for this position include a first-level university degree with a focus on modern languages or relevant technical fields. Candidates should also have a diploma from a recognized interpretation program or equivalent experience. A background in translation studies is beneficial, particularly for those who have experience in technical or legal translation.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least five years of experience in conference interpretation from English and Russian into French, ideally within a government, international organization, or large private sector context. Experience in translating complex technical or legal texts from English and Russian into French is also desirable, with a minimum of two years preferred.

Languages:
The position requires a complete command of French as a mother tongue or language of instruction, along with excellent knowledge of English and Russian. Basic knowledge of one or more of the other three ICAO languages (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish) is considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is fixed-term for an initial period of three years, with the first year being probationary for external candidates. ICAO staff members are expected to adhere to the standards of conduct for international civil servants and may be assigned to various activities or offices within the organization. The remuneration for this position includes a net base salary of USD $71,335 per annum, plus a post adjustment of USD $26,965 per annum, which is subject to change. ICAO offers a comprehensive benefits package in line with the International Civil Service Commission policies.
