Job Overview:
The Project Manager position within UNEP’s Ecosystems Division is crucial for overseeing the development and implementation of projects related to biodiversity and land degradation. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Head of the Global Environment Facility Biodiversity and Land Degradation Unit. This role involves identifying and developing project concepts in collaboration with internal and external partners, ensuring that these projects align with UNEP's strategic goals and meet the necessary quality standards. The Project Manager will also be responsible for supervising project implementation, monitoring progress, and ensuring that projects are executed in accordance with UNEP and Global Environment Facility policies. The position requires a proactive approach to project management, including the ability to adapt plans based on ongoing evaluations and stakeholder feedback. Additionally, the Project Manager will play a key role in knowledge management and data management within the Ecosystems Division, contributing to the overall effectiveness and impact of UNEP's initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Project Manager include:
  • Liaising with partners to identify and develop relevant project concepts;
  • Consulting with UNEP's Divisions and regional offices as necessary;
  • Advising project proponents on revisions to concepts based on peer reviews;
  • Monitoring project milestones to prevent delays;
  • Addressing reviews from the Global Environment Facility Secretariat;
  • Supervising Project Preparation Grant execution;
  • Verifying project proposals meet quality standards;
  • Supporting partners in mobilizing co-financing;
  • Preparing project supervision plans and organizing inception meetings; 1
  • Providing oversight and preparing reports according to UNEP and Global Environment Facility criteria; 1
  • Monitoring project progress and performance; 1
  • Maintaining project-related documentation; 1
  • Assisting with project revisions and evaluations; 1
  • Identifying lessons learned from project implementation; 1
  • Contributing to corporate tasks and evaluations; 1

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of project/programme management, environmental management, and biodiversity sciences. They should demonstrate the ability to analyze and resolve issues, conduct data collection, and apply judgment in their work. Professionalism, effective communication, planning and organizing skills, and leadership qualities are essential. The ideal candidate will show a commitment to gender balance and inclusivity in their work.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in biodiversity sciences, environmental sciences, natural resource management, environmental policy, or a closely related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of programs in data analytics or related fields is desirable.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in biodiversity and land degradation issues, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, is required. Candidates should have experience in conceptualizing and developing projects in the ecosystems and biodiversity field, with additional experience working with the Global Environment Facility being desirable. At least two years of experience in data analytics or a related area is also preferred.

Languages:
English is required, with a minimum proficiency of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Spanish and Portuguese are also required at the same proficiency level. This multilingual requirement reflects the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat and is essential for effective communication within the role.
