Job Overview: The Doctor position is integral to the UN common services of the UN country team in Zimbabwe, administered by UNDP. The role involves providing comprehensive primary health care with 24/7 emergency coverage, coordinating medical evacuations, and ensuring that UN personnel receive the necessary medical attention. The Doctor will be responsible for delivering primary health care services, conducting medical examinations, performing minor surgical procedures, and managing emergency situations. The position also includes overseeing occupational health services, promoting staff health, and providing travel medical services. The Doctor will work closely with UN personnel to address health concerns and ensure a safe working environment, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide comprehensive primary health care and emergency services to UN personnel and their eligible dependents.
Conduct periodical medical examinations and arrange necessary investigations.
Perform minor surgical procedures under local anesthesia.
Administer emergency resuscitation procedures and stabilize casualties for evacuation.
Maintain sufficient holding capacity for stabilization and support pending referral to higher-level care.
Administer routine vaccinations and disease prophylaxis measures.
Conduct basic diagnostic and laboratory tests.
Provide consultation and treatment for acute medical conditions.
Manage chronic medical conditions and facilitate access to local medical facilities. 1
Oversee implementation of preventive medical measures and promote staff health. 1
Provide travel medical services and advise on health issues related to work. 1
Advise management on medical evacuation and sick leave issues. 1
Produce informational materials about clinic services and maintain medical kits.
Required Qualifications:
Doctorate in Medicine (MD) or equivalent qualification.
Current registration to practice medicine in Zimbabwe or another UN member state.
Postgraduate training in clinical medical specialties is preferred.
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible clinical management experience.
Experience in providing comprehensive primary health care and emergency coverage.
Knowledge in promoting health and ensuring medical compatibility with job requirements.
Experience in conducting preventive health programs and health promotion activities.
Educational Background: The position requires a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) or an equivalent qualification. Candidates must have current registration to practice medicine in Zimbabwe or another UN member state. Postgraduate training in clinical medical specialties, particularly in Occupational Health, Tropical Medicine, General Practice, or Primary Care, is highly regarded. Candidates with an MD and qualifying experience may be considered in lieu of postgraduate training.
Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible clinical management experience in one of the areas of medicine. This experience should include providing comprehensive primary health care services and emergency coverage, as well as knowledge in evaluating and arranging medical evacuations and conducting preventive health programs.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, along with proficiency in either Shona or Ndebele. These language skills are essential for effective communication with UN personnel and their dependents.
