Job Overview: The Energy Associate position is integral to the UNHCR's mission of providing sustainable energy solutions to the Syrian refugee population in camps. The incumbent will play a critical role in ensuring that refugees have access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy services, which are essential for their daily needs and overall well-being. The Energy Associate will work closely with various technical sectors, including Programme and Protection teams, to implement energy projects that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7.1, which aims to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services. The role involves assessing energy needs, identifying alternative energy sources, and designing projects that enhance self-reliance and protection for refugees. The Energy Associate will also contribute to monitoring and coordinating sustainable energy activities, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to promote effective energy solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Energy Associate will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Contributing to the implementation of the sustainable energy programme by assessing and identifying cost-effective and appropriate sources of alternative energy for cooking, lighting, and electricity.
Designing specific projects and pilot initiatives for energy solutions, focusing on renewable energy to enhance self-reliance and protection.
Collaborating with multi-sectoral teams to integrate energy solutions with other sectors such as Environment, Protection, Shelter, Public Health, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.
Monitoring and coordinating all sustainable energy activities to ensure effective implementation and compliance with best practices.
Establishing partnerships with relevant organizations to ensure access to sustainable energy for refugees and surrounding communities.
Documenting project development processes, including monitoring, testing, troubleshooting, and lessons learned to build institutional knowledge.
Developing effective communication channels among stakeholders to share information on energy-related activities.
Identifying and managing risks associated with energy projects and seeking opportunities to enhance project outcomes.
Performing other related duties as required to support the overall mission of UNHCR in providing energy solutions to refugees.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 6 years of relevant job experience in the sustainable energy sector, with a strong background in working with government authorities, development partners, civil society, and the public/private sector. Essential qualifications include knowledge of policies and regulations related to energy, particularly renewable energy, and experience in financial management, business development, and cost recovery systems. Candidates should also demonstrate functional skills in natural resources management and have a solid understanding of energy audits and comparative analyses of fuel and energy systems. Additionally, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, with a bachelor's degree being preferred.
Educational Background: The educational background required for the Energy Associate position includes a high school diploma as a minimum qualification. However, candidates with a bachelor's degree or higher in relevant fields such as environmental science, energy management, or engineering will be given preference. Certifications in electricity and environmental management are also desirable, as they demonstrate a commitment to the field and enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role.
