Job Overview: The position of Consultant on Marine Pollution Profiling and Contingency Planning in Aqaba involves providing expert advice and support in the area of marine pollution management. The assignment is expected to last for a period of 8 months, during which the consultant will engage in fieldwork, stakeholder consultations, and report writing to deliver a thorough assessment and strategic plan.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be tasked with the following duties and responsibilities:
Conduct a thorough assessment of marine pollution sources in Aqaba, including industrial, agricultural, and urban runoff.
Collaborate with local stakeholders to gather data and insights on pollution impacts and response capabilities.
Develop a comprehensive marine pollution profiling report that outlines current conditions, risks, and potential impacts on marine biodiversity and local communities.
Create contingency plans that detail response strategies for various pollution scenarios, including oil spills, chemical leaks, and waste disposal incidents.
Facilitate workshops and training sessions for local authorities and community members on pollution prevention and response measures.
Prepare and submit progress reports and a final report summarizing findings, recommendations, and action plans to UNDP and relevant stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
Proven experience in marine pollution assessment and contingency planning.
Familiarity with international environmental regulations and best practices in pollution management.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience in stakeholder engagement and capacity building.
Educational Background: A minimum of a Master's degree in marine science, environmental science, environmental management, or a related field is required. A PhD in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an asset.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in marine pollution management, environmental consulting, or related fields. Experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs in similar roles will be highly regarded.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Arabic is considered an asset and will be advantageous for stakeholder engagement in the local context.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as an individual contractor role under the procurement process of UNDP. The contract duration is for 8 months, and the consultant is expected to work full-time during this period.
