Job Overview: The Consultant for Research Study on Migration and Border Management will play a crucial role in analyzing the impact of humanitarian crises and conflicts on migration patterns and border management in the MENA region. The position involves conducting comprehensive research to identify innovations and adaptations in migration governance and border security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, focusing on technology integration and policy reforms. The consultant will assess the role of regional cooperation and international actors in addressing irregular migration and displacement challenges. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations and actionable insights for policymakers, security agencies, and international organizations to enhance regional stability and promote sustainablemigration management solutions. The consultant will be expected to collaborate closely with the research team, particularly with the NAUSS expert assigned to the study, ensuring timely and effective communication throughout the research process.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for several key deliverables throughout the research project. The first deliverable includes the submission of an initial preparatory package, which consists of a clear study or work plan, study methodology, and an outline for IOM’s approval, due by April 15, 202
The second deliverable is the first draft of the complete research report, which must include documented sources and references, due by June 4, 202
The final deliverable is the submission of the research study final report, inclusive of the NAUSS expert’s consolidated portion, ready for translation and publication, along with a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the research findings and recommendations, due by July 25, 202
The consultant will also be evaluated based on the coherence and realism of the work plan, collaboration with the research team, timeliness of deliverables, and the quality of the research report, which should include an executive summary and concrete recommendations for policymakers and practitioners.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as migration studies, international relations, law, political science, sociology, or another social science. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree combined with six years of relevant working experience in conducting research on topics related to migration and border management is acceptable. Extensive knowledge and expertise in migration-affected communities in the Arab region, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, is highly desirable. Strong research and analytical skills, including both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, are essential. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of migration trends, border management, and the socio-political context of the MENA region, as well as experience in conducting relevant research studies.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in fields related to migration studies, international relations, law, political science, sociology, or other social sciences. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree with significant professional experience in relevant research areas may be considered. This educational foundation is critical for understanding the complexities of migration and border management in the context of humanitarian crises and conflicts.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have substantial experience in conducting research related to migration and border management. This includes direct engagement with migration-affected communities, particularly in the Arab region, and familiarity with the socio-political dynamics that influence migration patterns. Candidates should have a proven track record of producing high-quality research outputs and be adept at both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of Arabic is considered an advantage. IOM's official languages also include French and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be beneficial. Language skills will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments to ensure candidates meet the necessary communication standards for the role.
Additional Notes: The consultancy is home-based, meaning that travel is not required for this position. The contract duration and specific terms of employment will be discussed upon selection.
