Job Overview:
As a Mechanical Technician in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) Vacuum Team, you will be integral to ensuring the quality, installation, and operation of vacuum components within CERN's accelerator complex. This role involves a variety of responsibilities, including the mechanical assembly of vacuum components and sub-assemblies, conducting leak detection, and performing quality control checks prior to installation. You will also participate in the installation of vacuum components in the SPS tunnel, which includes pumpdown, leak detection, and commissioning activities. Additionally, you will support logistics and procurement for vacuum chambers and related equipment, and document acceptance tests and interventions to maintain accurate traceability and reporting. This position is crucial for maintaining the operational integrity of CERN's advanced scientific equipment and contributes to the overall mission of advancing our understanding of the universe.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Technician include:
  • Carrying out mechanical assembly of vacuum components and sub-assemblies, ensuring adherence to quality standards.
  • Conducting leak detection and quality control checks prior to the installation of vacuum components.
  • Participating in the installation of vacuum components in the SPS tunnel, including pumpdown procedures, leak detection, and commissioning activities.
  • Supporting the organization of logistics and procurement for vacuum chambers and related equipment.
  • Documenting acceptance tests and interventions to ensure accurate traceability and reporting of all activities.
  • Collaborating effectively with team members and other departments to ensure smooth operations and project completion.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment by adhering to health and safety regulations, especially when working in radiation areas and underground installations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess essential skills including knowledge of mechanical assembly and design principles, the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, and practical experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment. Basic computer skills for documenting and reporting are also required. Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team are essential. Desirable skills include previous knowledge of vacuum technology, such as leak detection and pressure measurement. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical or Electromechanical Technology (or a related field).

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a general secondary education diploma. Candidates with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this role. The educational background should ideally be in Mechanical or Electromechanical Technology or a closely related field, providing a solid foundation in mechanical principles and practices.

Experience:
Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in a relevant field. This experience should ideally involve practical work related to mechanical assembly, maintenance of mechanical equipment, or similar roles that demonstrate the ability to perform the tasks required in this position.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. Proficiency in both languages is desirable but not required. Effective communication in either language is essential for collaboration within the team and with other departments.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week. The target start date for this position is April 1, 202
  • This role involves work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations, requiring a valid driving license and exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain conditions. Candidates must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The position offers a monthly stipend of 4687 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks of annual closure, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances. On-the-job and formal training, including language classes, will also be provided.
