Job Overview:
The intern position is designed for students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in public information and communications within the United Nations framework. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Project Management Officer in the Small Arms and Light Weapons Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (SALW DDR) program. The role involves assisting in the creation and dissemination of public information materials, which are crucial for promoting the work and initiatives of the division. The intern will also be involved in organizing events and preparing multimedia content, which will enhance their skills in communication, project management, and teamwork. This internship provides an opportunity to learn about the operations of the UN and contribute to meaningful projects that impact the Great Lakes Region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: assisting in drafting and editing content for public information materials such as press releases, newsletters, blogs, and social media posts; preparing for meetings and seminars, including drafting meeting minutes; producing multimedia materials for both online and offline use, which may include infographics, motion graphics, short videos, publication covers, presentation templates, and event flyers; creating professional PowerPoint presentations that highlight the division's work, projects, publications, and activities; assisting in video production tasks, including shooting and editing videos, mixing sound, and animating slideshows; organizing and executing the launch of publications and events; conducting background research for public information materials; and initiating and carrying out assigned tasks or special projects as directed by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must be students in their final year of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent, or they must have completed a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. program. The position requires strong communication skills, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Familiarity with multimedia production tools and software is advantageous, as is a proactive approach to learning and taking on new challenges. The intern should be adaptable and willing to assist with various tasks as needed.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in communications, public relations, international relations, or a related field. A strong academic background is essential, as the intern will be expected to contribute to high-quality public information materials and engage with complex topics related to the Great Lakes Region.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant internships, volunteer work, or academic projects that demonstrate skills in communication, public relations, or multimedia production will be considered an asset. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in international affairs and the workings of the United Nations.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French, which is another official language of the UN, is desirable and will enhance the candidate's ability to perform effectively in this role. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and understanding. Knowledge of another UN language is considered a plus.
