Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering international collaboration in the pursuit of understanding the fundamental structure of the universe through advanced scientific research and technology.

Job Overview:
As an applied physicist at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) upgrade project. This position involves the optimization, construction, commissioning, and operation of innovative modules based on Spaghetti Calorimeter (SpaCal) technology. You will be expected to take a leading role in enhancing the LHCb ECAL during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) by integrating new modules that utilize SpaCal technology. Your responsibilities will include developing and participating in quality assurance activities for the ECAL LS3 enhancement, optimizing signal shaping for the new SpaCal modules in collaboration with electronics experts, and organizing test beam efforts, including data analysis, within the LHCb ECAL upgrade project. Additionally, you will actively participate in research and development on scintillating materials for future particle physics experiments, contributing to the advancement of the field.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the enhancement of the LHCb ECAL during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) with new modules using SpaCal technology.
  • Develop and engage in hands-on quality assurance activities for the ECAL LS3 enhancement.
  • Optimize signal shaping for the new SpaCal modules in collaboration with electronics experts.
  • Organize and coordinate test beam efforts, including data analysis, within the LHCb ECAL upgrade project.
  • Actively participate in R&D on scintillating materials for the LHCb PicoCal (LS4) and future particle physics experiments.
  • Manage and coordinate teams, including supervising students involved in the project.
  • Conduct simulations, design, and development of detector components.
  • Analyze and optimize detector performance, ensuring high-quality results.
  • Apply calorimetry methods and techniques effectively in experimental setups. 1
  • Maintain a structured and organized approach to work, setting priorities and planning tasks to achieve results. 1
  • Build and maintain constructive work relationships within teams, fostering collaboration and effective communication.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Physics or a related field. A proven track record in optical calorimetry for particle physics experiments is essential. Applicants should demonstrate experience in calorimeter detector tests, including data analysis from beam tests, as well as simulations and optimization of calorimeter detector designs. Familiarity with the characterization of organic and inorganic scintillators is required, along with an understanding of signal treatment for optical calorimetry. Experience in managing and coordinating teams, including supervising students, is also necessary.

Educational Background:
A PhD in Physics or a closely related field is required for this position. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong foundation in experimental physics, particularly in areas related to calorimetry and particle physics.

Experience:
Candidates should have a substantial level of experience in the field of optical calorimetry for particle physics experiments. This includes demonstrated experience in calorimeter detector tests, data analysis from beam tests, and simulations and optimization of detector designs. Experience in characterizing scintillators and managing teams is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory. Candidates should also have a commitment to learning French, which is considered beneficial for the role.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, with hybrid job flexibility. The role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and may require working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Shift work and stand-by duty may also be required. Candidates must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this job is EP-LBD-2026-11-LD.
