Job Overview:
The Associate position in the Audience Engagement division of Human Rights Watch is designed for individuals who are eager to learn about the organization's work and contribute to its creative services and audience engagement efforts. This role primarily involves providing administrative support to the Director of the Audience Engagement division and the team. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a hybrid working schedule, balancing in-office and remote work as needed, while being based within commuting distance of the New York office. The position offers an opportunity to engage with various digital and creative techniques to promote HRW's mission across multiple platforms and languages, thereby enhancing the organization's outreach and impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate will be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks that are crucial for the smooth operation of the Audience Engagement division. Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing day-to-day administrative support to the Director and staff, including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and assisting with travel arrangements.
  • Recording and processing divisional invoices and coordinating with consultants and vendors.
  • Taking detailed meeting notes and creating actionable items or next steps.
  • Establishing and maintaining organized filing and archiving systems.
  • Supporting divisional projects by attending relevant meetings, conducting desk research, and assisting with translations.
  • Managing project activities in coordination with colleagues across the organization.
  • Drafting documents, memos, and workback plans, and responding to information requests.
  • Assisting with the organization of events such as retreats and staff meetings.
  • Supporting recruitment and onboarding processes for interns. 1
  • Carrying out additional duties as required by the Director or the division.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field. A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required, particularly in administrative support, finance, operations, or project management. Proficiency in MS Office applications, especially Excel, is essential, along with excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Experience with Salesforce or similar databases is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate self-motivation, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment. The ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure is crucial, as is experience in project management, preferably with tools like Asana, Monday.com, or Trello. A strong interest in human rights issues is also desirable.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required for this position. Equivalent work experience or training may also be considered acceptable. The educational background should ideally align with the responsibilities of the role, emphasizing skills in administration, project management, or related areas.

Experience:
The position requires at least one year of relevant work experience. Candidates with experience in administrative support, finance, operations, or project management will be preferred. Familiarity with project management software and tools is also beneficial, as is any experience related to human rights advocacy or engagement.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills required for effective interaction with diverse audiences. While English is the primary language for this position, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly in enhancing communication with global partners and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This is a full-time position based in New York, with a hybrid working schedule that includes both in-office and remote work. The salary range for this position is between US $60,001 and $64,328, and HRW offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance, as well as a retirement savings plan and twenty days of vacation per year.
