Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at UNCTAD is designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience in the field of trade and development. Interns will work full-time, either in-person in Geneva or remotely, and are expected to commit to a schedule of five days per week for a duration of three months, with the possibility of extension up to six months based on departmental needs. Interns will be involved in various research activities related to the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) Section of the Policy Analysis and Research Branch, contributing to the analysis of LDC graduation processes and related vulnerabilities. The role includes conducting desk research, statistical analyses, and assisting in the preparation of publications and presentations. Interns will receive training and mentoring throughout their internship, ensuring they gain valuable insights and skills relevant to their academic and professional development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks under the supervision of the Economic Affairs Officer, including:
  • Conducting desk research on LDC graduation and related impacts, synthesizing findings, and drafting inputs for publications.
  • Performing statistical and econometric analyses using international datasets such as UNCTADstat and World Development Indicators.
  • Providing research assistance, including literature reviews and empirical analysis of macroeconomic trends.
  • Formulating policy conclusions based on analytical research.
  • Participating in online meetings and relevant training sessions.
  • Observing all applicable UN rules and regulations, and ensuring that all materials prepared during the internship are submitted to the receiving department.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and impartiality in all communications and interactions related to the internship.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and have familiarity with statistics and economic analysis tools such as R or Stata. A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. Candidates should also possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes a university degree in economics, development studies, or a related field. While no prior work experience is necessary, candidates with previous research or volunteer experience related to sustainable development or least developed countries will have an advantage. The internship is designed for individuals who are currently pursuing or have recently completed their studies in relevant disciplines, ensuring that their academic knowledge can be applied in a practical setting.

Experience:
No prior professional work experience is required for this internship position. However, candidates should have a field of study that closely aligns with the internship's focus on trade and development issues. The internship is intended for students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience and apply their academic knowledge in a real-world context. The emphasis is on learning and contributing to the work of UNCTAD rather than on previous employment history.

A working knowledge of French is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate communication within the UN system and with stakeholders from French-speaking countries. Proficiency in additional languages may also be beneficial, depending on the specific tasks and projects assigned during the internship.
