Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, with member states primarily in Europe, and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology. CERN's mission is to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe through innovative research and collaboration across various scientific disciplines.
Job Overview: The position of Designer of High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) systems at CERN involves contributing to the development of REBCO superconducting cables and magnets, which are crucial for advanced accelerator and energy applications. The role encompasses the entire design process, from conceptual studies to the creation of detailed manufacturing drawings using CATIA V
The designer will be responsible for preparing and maintaining technical documentation, verifying manufacturing drawings for compliance with design standards, and following up on the manufacturing of mechanical parts. Additionally, the designer will participate in the assembly of HTS prototypes and contribute to their mechanical integration, ensuring that all components meet the required specifications and quality standards. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies that have the potential to revolutionize energy applications and accelerator systems.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Designer of HTS systems will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Designing mechanical components and systems for HTS cables and magnets, ensuring that all designs are feasible and meet project requirements.
Creating detailed manufacturing drawings and technical specifications using CATIA V5, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
Preparing and maintaining thorough technical documentation, including design reports and calculation notes, to support the development process.
Verifying manufacturing drawings to ensure they comply with design standards and quality assurance requirements.
Collaborating with workshops and suppliers to follow up on the manufacturing of mechanical parts, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to specifications.
Participating in the assembly of HTS prototypes, contributing to their mechanical integration and ensuring that all components function as intended.
Analyzing and solving basic mechanical engineering problems using principles of strength-of-materials.
Preparing clear technical reports and engineering documentation to communicate findings and progress to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, with specific qualifications including:
Experience in the design of mechanical systems and components, demonstrating a solid understanding of mechanical properties of materials and manufacturing technologies.
Proficiency in producing 2D technical drawings that comply with ISO dimensioning and tolerancing standards (ISO GPS).
Ability to analyze and solve mechanical engineering problems effectively.
Experience in preparing clear and concise technical reports and engineering documentation.
Initial experience with precise mechanical assembly of components, showcasing attention to detail and organizational skills.
Proficiency with CAD software, preferably CATIA V5, and familiarity with mechanical calculation and analysis tools.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of mechanical design and engineering principles necessary for the role. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years to be eligible for this position, ensuring that they are up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This experience should ideally include work related to mechanical design, assembly, and documentation, providing a solid foundation for the responsibilities of the position. Applicants with prior experience at CERN as a fellow or graduate contractor are not eligible for this role.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time role with a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite at CERN in Geneva. The target start date for this role is April 1, 202
The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5266 to 5793 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year and additional benefits such as comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
