Job Overview: The Computing Engineer position at CERN involves building, deploying, and maintaining the infrastructure for the Open Research Europe publishing platform, which is based on Open Journal System (OJS). Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include designing, deploying, and maintaining the Open Research Europe infrastructure using automated CI/CD workflows. The engineer will work collaboratively with the business and editorial operations team to translate service requirements into technical implementations. Responsibilities also include ensuring secure, reliable, and scalable operations through monitoring, backups, incident response, and regular performance and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security audits. The engineer will develop and manage integrations with authentication providers, indexers, and other third-party services, and support the migration from the legacy platform to the new system. Day-to-day IT service management will be overseen, including technical user support, supervision of a junior team member, preparation of service documentation, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the engineer will prepare technical documentation and EU project deliverables, contributing improvements to open-source projects such as OJS and related infrastructure components.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field. Proven experience with containerized infrastructure and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or OpenShift is essential. Strong knowledge of administration" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">system administration, databases, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation tools (e.g., Helm, GitLab CI) is required. Experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining web platforms like Open Journal Systems (OJS) or WordPress is necessary, along with the ability to develop integrations and advanced automation scripts in PHP, Python, and SQL. Familiarity with IT service management, including monitoring, security auditing, and backup/recovery best practices, is also required. Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills are essential, as is experience in contributing to technical reports or open-source projects, providing user support, and supervising team members.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong foundation in programming techniques and languages, particularly PHP and Python, as well as knowledge of software development and testing methodologies.
