Job Overview:
The Computing Engineer position at CERN involves building, deploying, and maintaining the infrastructure for the Open Research Europe publishing platform, which is based on Open Journal System (OJS). The role requires managing Kubernetes/OpenShift deployments, developing integrations, and ensuring the secure, reliable, and scalable operation of the service. The successful candidate will work closely with the business and editorial operations team to translate service requirements into technical implementations, ensuring the smooth operation of the publishing platform. This position is crucial for supporting the publishing workflow and enhancing the overall functionality of the platform.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include designing, deploying, and maintaining the Open Research Europe infrastructure using automated CI/CD workflows. The engineer will work collaboratively with the business and editorial operations team to translate service requirements into technical implementations. Responsibilities also include ensuring secure, reliable, and scalable operations through monitoring, backups, incident response, and regular performance and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security audits. The engineer will develop and manage integrations with authentication providers, indexers, and other third-party services, and support the migration from the legacy platform to the new system. Day-to-day IT service management will be overseen, including technical user support, supervision of a junior team member, preparation of service documentation, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the engineer will prepare technical documentation and EU project deliverables, contributing improvements to open-source projects such as OJS and related infrastructure components.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field. Proven experience with containerized infrastructure and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or OpenShift is essential. Strong knowledge of administration" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">system administration, databases, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation tools (e.g., Helm, GitLab CI) is required. Experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining web platforms like Open Journal Systems (OJS) or WordPress is necessary, along with the ability to develop integrations and advanced automation scripts in PHP, Python, and SQL. Familiarity with IT service management, including monitoring, security auditing, and backup/recovery best practices, is also required. Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills are essential, as is experience in contributing to technical reports or open-source projects, providing user support, and supervising team members.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong foundation in programming techniques and languages, particularly PHP and Python, as well as knowledge of software development and testing methodologies.

Experience:
Candidates should have proven experience in managing containerized infrastructure and orchestration tools, specifically Kubernetes or OpenShift. Experience in system administration, databases, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation is crucial. Additionally, candidates should have a background in developing, deploying, and maintaining web platforms, particularly Open Journal Systems (OJS) or WordPress, and should be familiar with developing integrations and automation scripts in relevant programming languages.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, as it is beneficial for communication within the organization.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The role may require work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, as well as stand-by duty when necessary. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is IT-CA-OSI-2026-2-LD.
