The Liaison Officer will work within the International Relations Sector, specifically in the Education, Communications, and Outreach Group, which is dedicated to generating public engagement and support for CERN's scientific missions.
Duties and Responsibilities: As the Liaison Officer for Local Community Engagement, your primary responsibilities will include: developing and implementing engagement activities that promote mutual understanding and collaboration with local communities; establishing and maintaining contacts with civil society representatives and community leaders; actively engaging with local communities to understand their needs and concerns; leading public dialogue efforts and representing CERN in engagements with stakeholders; serving as the first point of contact for inquiries from local individuals and groups; planning and coordinating events and initiatives that promote dialogue and transparency; contributing to the development of content for newsletters and communication tools; and preparing official reports and presentations related to your work.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in fields such as International Relations, Public Relations, Administration, Sociology, Journalism, Communication, or STEM with a science communication profile. The role requires demonstrated extensive experience in stakeholder and community engagement, ideally within large-scale scientific or infrastructure projects. A solid understanding of nonprofit networks and experience in community organizations is essential. Candidates should also have a proven ability to engage effectively with authorities and senior officials, as well as experience in public speaking and media relations.
Educational Background: A Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field is required for this position. This could include disciplines such as International Relations, Public Relations, Sociology, Journalism, Communication, or a STEM field with a focus on science communication. The educational background should provide a strong foundation for understanding the complexities of community engagement and public dialogue in a scientific context.
Experience: Candidates should have extensive experience in community engagement or liaison roles, particularly in large-scale scientific, engineering, or infrastructure projects. This includes managing community relations and multilateral relations, with a proven track record of success. Experience in engaging with authorities and civil society groups is crucial, as is the ability to adapt frameworks to meet unique challenges in community engagement.
Languages: Fluency in both spoken and written English and French is mandatory for this position. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages, particularly in writing engaging and accessible texts on complex scientific subjects. Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract. The role requires full-time commitment with a 40-hour work week, and it may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays. A valid driving license is also required. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is IR-ECO-CE-2025-247-LD.
