Job Overview: The Media and Communications Associate will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the IOM Djibouti office's Media and Communication Strategy. This position involves collaborating closely with the Media and Communications Officer and the Global Communications Team to enhance the visibility of IOM's work and to communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including media, government entities, and the public. The Associate will be responsible for drafting and producing public information materials, managing social media content, and assisting in outreach efforts to raise awareness about migration issues. The role requires a proactive approach to communication, ensuring that IOM's narrative is accurately represented and that the organization's activities are effectively showcased to both local and international audiences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in the implementation of the Media and Communication Strategy for IOM Djibouti.
Develop outreach and communications strategies to promote IOM’s work and foster an accurate narrative on migration.
Gather and disseminate public information regarding IOM activities through various channels.
Draft, edit, and produce public information materials, including press briefing notes, newsletters, and social media content.
Provide logistical support for media events and visibility initiatives.
Coordinate with UN and other partners for the promotion of global campaigns.
Prepare content for external events to showcase IOM activities.
Maintain close contact with Country Office staff for content production, including human-interest stories and multimedia.
Disseminate resources for crisis-affected communities, particularly regarding climate change. 1
Ensure timely publication and distribution of media content across IOM channels. 1
Contribute to IOM’s social media presence and develop new communication initiatives. 1
Strengthen relationships with local and international media to enhance IOM’s reputation. 1
Provide logistical and technical support for training sessions on communication best practices. 1
Review media and highlight relevant humanitarian topics for regional colleagues. 1

Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a solid understanding of graphic design, web management, and social media. Familiarity with migration-related issues in the region is advantageous. The ability to work independently under pressure, attention to detail, and self-motivation are essential. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to ethical standards and organizational principles, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively within teams.
Educational Background: A High School Degree/Certificate with five years of relevant professional experience is required, or a University degree in Media and Communications, Public Information, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited institution with three years of relevant experience. Accredited institutions are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: Candidates should have experience in a public information role at a UN agency or similar organization, as well as experience working for a news media organization. This background is crucial for understanding the dynamics of communication in a humanitarian context and for effectively engaging with various stakeholders.
Languages: Fluency in both French and English is required, both orally and in writing. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly Spanish, is considered an asset. Language skills will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and oral assessments.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning only candidates with a valid residence and work permit for Djibouti will be considered. The appointment is contingent upon medical fitness certification and verification of residency and visa requirements. IOM has a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and discrimination.
