Job Overview: The Specialist, Great Plains position is a critical role within the Great Plains Wildlife Initiative (GWPI) team at WWF. The primary focus of this position is to support the restoration and conservation of key species such as bison, black-footed ferrets, prairie dogs, and beavers, along with their habitats in the Great Plains ecoregion of the United States. The Program Officer will work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including Tribal, federal, and state agencies, private landowners, NGOs, and academic institutions, to foster partnerships that advance wildlife conservation goals. This role requires a proactive approach to building relationships, providing technical and financial assistance, and contributing to fundraising efforts to ensure the sustainability of conservation projects. The Specialist will also engage in public outreach and advocacy efforts to promote wildlife restoration initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Specialist include supporting the GPWI team in achieving strategic goals related to wildlife restoration, particularly for bison and other endangered species. The Specialist will identify and strengthen relationships with local communities and land managers interested in collaborating on conservation projects. They will engage with various partners to implement projects sustainably, providing technical assistance and strategic guidance. The role involves tracking progress, contributing to program planning, and developing innovative solutions for conservation challenges. The Specialist will draft work plans, budgets, and administrative documentation, ensuring compliance with donor requirements. They will also assist in writing funding proposals and progress reports, represent WWF at meetings, and communicate project outcomes to diverse audiences. Additionally, the Specialist will manage consultants and interns as needed and perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Specialist position should possess 4–6 years of professional experience in conservation or related fields, or 2+ years with an advanced degree in natural resources management, wildlife ecology, or environmental studies. A strong understanding of regional ecology and demonstrated experience managing conservation projects in the Great Plains is essential. The ability to collaborate effectively with Native nations and rural communities, along with cultural sensitivity, is required. Candidates should have experience in proposal writing, grant management, and donor engagement, as well as strong research, analytical, and project management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary, including the ability to present complex ecological topics to diverse audiences. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are also important.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in natural resources management, wildlife ecology, environmental studies, or a related field is required. An advanced degree is preferred and may substitute for some years of required experience. Candidates should have a solid foundation in conservation principles and practices, as well as familiarity with the ecological dynamics of the Great Plains region.
Experience: The position requires 4–6 years of relevant professional experience, or 2+ years of experience with an advanced degree. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing complex conservation projects and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities. Experience in fundraising and grant management is also beneficial.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, with strong written and verbal communication skills. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly those relevant to the communities and partners in the Great Plains region.
Additional Notes: This position is full-time and requires the candidate to be based within the Great Plains, preferably in western South Dakota or eastern Colorado. The role may involve travel up to 25–50% within the Great Plains region, including remote locations. The position is exempt from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
