Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) was established in 1951 and is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration. It is a member of the United Nations system and operates in over 150 countries worldwide. IOM's mission is to promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, providing assistance to migrants, especially those facing vulnerabilities due to displacement, trauma, and limited access to care. In Algeria, IOM focuses on supporting migrants who are experiencing heightened vulnerabilities, ensuring their mental health and psychosocial well-being through various programs and services.

Job Overview:
The consultant will be responsible for designing and facilitating socio-cultural activities that are culturally relevant and inclusive, aligned with the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) objectives. The role involves creating safe spaces for expression and connection among migrants, fostering resilience, emotional healing, and social cohesion. The consultant will engage with the community to understand their cultural and social preferences, ensuring that the activities resonate with their traditions and expectations. The position requires a proactive approach to community engagement and a commitment to enhancing the well-being of migrants through participatory and inclusive programming.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct participatory assessments to identify cultural and social preferences among beneficiaries, gathering community input to adapt activities accordingly.
  • Design and facilitate diverse socio-cultural activities such as film screenings, debates, music and dance workshops, cultural celebrations, and collective events, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all participants, particularly women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
  • Align all activities with MHPSS objectives, focusing on fostering resilience, promoting social cohesion, and enhancing emotional well-being.
  • Monitor and report on participation, feedback, psychosocial impacts, and challenges, submitting monthly progress reports and a final report with recommendations for sustainability.
  • Maintain a daily presence in the assigned center to ensure consistent support and engagement with the community.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong competencies in participatory assessment, facilitation, monitoring, and reporting. Familiarity with IOM’s MHPSS framework is highly desirable. The consultant should demonstrate the ability to create safe and welcoming environments for participation and have a proven track record in community-based programming and socio-cultural initiatives.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in social sciences, education, psychology, sociology, or related fields is required for this position. This educational background is essential to understand the complexities of migration and the psychosocial needs of migrants.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of professional experience in community-based programming, MHPSS, or socio-cultural initiatives is required. Candidates should have proven expertise in designing and facilitating socio-cultural activities with psychosocial objectives, demonstrating their ability to engage effectively with diverse communities.

Languages:
Fluency in French and English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of a Sub-Saharan dialect is considered a strong asset, as it enhances communication with a broader range of beneficiaries and supports inclusivity in programming.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy will be based in Algiers, and any offer made to the candidate is subject to funding confirmation. The appointment will require certification of medical fitness, verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP) for the duration of the consultancy, but does not cover evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational issues and must provide proof of coverage before starting work. IOM maintains a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM, including discrimination and harassment. IOM does not charge any fees during the recruitment process and only accepts applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system.
