Job Overview:
The Principal Banker position is a key role within the Sustainable Infrastructure Middle East & Africa team at EBRD, focusing on the energy and infrastructure sectors in the Bank's Countries of Operation, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including project development, implementation, and monitoring. The Principal Banker will be involved in all aspects of project origination, structuring, execution, and monitoring, ensuring that projects align with the Bank's operational objectives. The position requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to manage client relationships effectively. The Principal Banker will also play a significant role in business development and policy dialogue, contributing to the Bank's mission of fostering sustainable development in the regions it serves.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Structuring and Execution: As a senior project team member, the Principal Banker will work closely with operation leaders on complex transactions, contributing to project structuring and execution. They will lead negotiations, manage project teams, and ensure compliance with the Bank's standards throughout the project due diligence process.
  • Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation and Reporting: The Principal Banker will oversee the monitoring of projects, ensuring high-quality reporting and effective client relationship management. They will address any implementation issues and ensure compliance with donor reporting requirements.
  • Policy Dialogue: The Principal Banker will engage in policy dialogue, supporting initiatives at both project and national levels, and assist in securing grants and technical cooperation funds.
  • Business Development: The role involves marketing and developing business opportunities within the relevant sectors and countries, screening project proposals, and identifying viable investments.
  • Staff Management: The Principal Banker will be responsible for recruiting, training, and mentoring junior bankers, ensuring their professional development and effective workload distribution. They will also uphold the Bank's values and standards of integrity and ethical conduct.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience in relevant fields. Professional qualifications such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA are desirable. Strong quantitative skills are essential, along with the ability to interpret financial information and utilize financial models. Candidates should have excellent stakeholder management, coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills, as well as strong relationship management and negotiation abilities. Proficiency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of the local language is advantageous.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred, indicating a higher level of expertise and understanding of complex financial concepts. Professional qualifications such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA are also highly regarded, as they demonstrate a commitment to professional development and expertise in analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">financial analysis and management.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have significant relevant experience in the financial industry, particularly from investment or commercial banks, private equity firms, asset management firms, or auditing/financial consulting firms that operate to international standards. Practical experience in leading complex transactions through the full project life cycle is essential, along with a strong background in project finance and/or climate finance, especially within the energy or infrastructure sectors in sub-Saharan Africa.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the Bank. A good command of the local language in the regions of operation is considered an advantage, as it facilitates better communication with local stakeholders and enhances relationship management.
