Job Overview:
The Internal Auditor position at CERN is designed for experienced professionals in the field of auditing, whether internal or external. This role provides a unique opportunity to advance one's career in a collaborative and international environment. The Internal Auditor will be responsible for contributing to the development of the annual internal audit plan through comprehensive risk assessments and will independently conduct audits in accordance with the approved plan. The position requires the auditor to provide expert advice on governance, risk management, internal controls, and process improvements, thereby supporting various departments and services within CERN. The auditor will also produce clear and insightful audit reports, formulate actionable recommendations, and facilitate management's agreement on proposed actions, ensuring follow-up on their implementation. This role is pivotal in enhancing and protecting organizational value by providing risk-based, objective assurance and insightful advice that aligns with CERN's mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Internal Auditor will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Contributing to the development of the annual internal audit plan through comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Independently performing audits in line with the approved audit plan.
  • Providing expert advice on governance, risk management, internal controls, and process improvements to various departments and services upon request.
  • Producing clear and insightful audit reports that include recommendations for improvement.
  • Facilitating management's agreement on proposed actions and following up on the implementation of these actions.
  • Acting as a liaison for the Organization’s External Auditors.
  • Leading or contributing to internal audit-related projects and initiatives, ensuring that all audit activities are conducted in accordance with Global Internal Audit Standards.
  • Engaging in continuous professional development to stay updated with the latest auditing practices and methodologies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Internal Auditor position must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Auditing, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field. Relevant certifications such as ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) or CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) are highly advantageous and preferred. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong understanding of auditing principles and practices, as well as the ability to apply these in a practical context within an international organization.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Auditing, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a closely related discipline. This advanced education is essential for understanding complex financial systems and auditing processes, which are critical for the role of an Internal Auditor at CERN.

Experience:
Candidates should have demonstrated experience in financial, compliance, or performance auditing, utilizing a professional audit methodology. Experience in an international environment is highly desirable, as it reflects the diverse and collaborative nature of CERN's work. Familiarity with data analytics and related tools is considered an asset, enhancing the auditor's ability to analyze and interpret complex data effectively.

Languages:

Additional Notes:
The Internal Auditor position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure, subject to certain conditions. The role requires full-time commitment with working hours set at 40 hours per week. The position is fully onsite at CERN in Geneva. The job grade for this position is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this job is DG-IA-2025-268-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, which increases in line with relevant experience. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year, plus an additional 2 weeks of annual closure.
